One of the lads on our club run this morning had to do a short ride so he could get up there and take advantage of his VIP ticket...
Last 5 mins should be interesting, at least 🙂

Don't have Sky Sports. Don't seem to have Pick channel on our Freeview (I know there are some I'm not getting, need to sort the antenna).

It says at http://www1.skysports.com/hourrecord/news/32463/9861529/sir-bradley-wiggins-hour-record-attempt-how-to-watch that you can watch via the SKy Sports App. I'm in that on the Xbox, however in this the only thing I can see to do is select Sky Sports 2 - it tells me I can't watch this without a sub. What am I missing?

(I could use other ways, but that seems the most obvious one to get it on the main TV).

Nominally 55km was the target = 220 laps

Just halfway at 109, so well on track to beat Alex Dowsett, a bit behind 55km though

Cant stand Wiggins. He's been pretty derogatory about Dowsett, in terms of saying he'll beat that record. I'd prefer if Dowsett's stood.

Is it derogatory to tell the truth? Bar injury or mechanical failure he was always going to break the record, it was always going to be about by how much.

Eh? He'd done tests up to 45 minutes. He knew he was going to smash it. Dowsett knew he was going to smash it. What is he supposed to say when asked? 🙄

It's not derogatory at all

If you have any concept of FTP and CdA you'd know he'd beat it, easily

That was epic.

Dont think dowsett will bother having another go at that to be fair that bars been raised a fair distance when you look back at previous increments

I wonder if he will be back to smash the 55.25km barrier he was originally aiming for...

I was really hoping he was going to go more than 55.291 - would be surprised if he comes back for another go, though I reckon it's more likely than Dowsett having another go. I doubt he had an extra 1.6km in the tank (when he accelerated he was still going slower than Wiggo).

Apparently it was the high air pressure that kept him under 55km. I do wonder if he'd give it a go at altitude

Altitude is extremely unlikely. Maybe another go with normally lower air pressure if there's an opportunity whilst he's still on form.

Tony Martin wants to have a crack at it, I definitely think he could go further, would have been less sure if pressure conditions had been better for Wiggins record, but as it stands I can see Martin beating it.

hutch attempt was for the Athlete hour (steel bike, drop bars) you should read his book 'Faster', it's a brilliant read

I can see Dowsett or somebody else breaking it, Geraint could 🙂

doesn't stop it being a top ride from Wiggins though, the technical skills were brilliant so anyone cracking that record needs to have the full set - preparation plan, track skill, pacing and raw power

Epic performance.

I've got mixed emotions though. I agree with Hutchinson - that'll be beaten pretty quickly. If I was Cancellara or Martin I would probably be pretty pleased with that outcome. If they get a better day than Wiggins got it will more than make up for their lack of track pedigree. But I can't decide if that's a bad thing or not - in one way it would be a bit of a shame if the record was put out of sight for a generation.

He does have a well practiced air of nonchalance doesn't he, I bet that hurt like absolute hell.

Olympic track and time trial gold, TDF yellow jersey, world TT champ, world road champ? And now this. Makes him one of the greats I think.

er, he hasn't won the world road champs. Though I'm fairly sure he's unique in having won all of the others.

started well, tailed off i though, (bit like some hour attempts) think I've had 30 pages to read for a month,

Geraint could

I am not sure anyone about currently can beat that
he is a TT specialist and he also has the track pedigree
No other cyclist has both of these currently IMHO.
Better atmospherics might be a help and I would like to see Spartacus and Martin try but I dont think they will beat it.

^^ totally agree. Every record will be beaten one day but Wiggins has set a high mark. I wouldn't be suprised if Martens and Sparticus even bother to try.

[quote=Junkyard ]Better atmospherics might be a help and I would like to see Spartacus and Martin try but I dont think they will beat it.

Better atmospherics would probably be enough to give Martin a chance - Spartacus isn't quite good enough at that sort of effort any more though I don't think. I reckon 55 would have shelved it for a while, 54.5 they'll still think it's worth a try.

The problem for Martin with that is that whilst it might be doable it would require a lot of specific training - much more than Wiggo needed, as he also has to learn the track - all for something he might not manage. He'll have to spend quite a bit of time on track even just to be able to do proper testing. Though with his programme there's probably space to fit that in if it's something he wants to do enough.

Dont disagree but they are the only ones on the radar who can even attempt it and we would get excited about it
Would anyone care if Dowsett tried again?
Not being rude or disrespectfull but he wont match Wiggo

Wiggins did make a valid point about Dowsett in his post-ride interview.
Dowsett is a fair bit younger than Wiggins (8 years I think) so has time on his side should he want another crack at it.

Would anyone care if Dowsett tried again?

Wiggo is a household name, backed by one of the biggest media machines in the world.
Nobody outside cycling has ever heard of Dowsett, so sadly I think you're right - nobody outside cycling would care.

I still reckon that with good conditions, Dowsett could do it. He seemed to have a bit left in the locker when I did his last attempt. I also wouldnt rule out Wiggo having another go to get it to 55km+

Thats just it dowsett may well have another go......knowing he finished well within limits last time.

Going too hard and going pop

Wiggo is the master of judging his own limits and energy expenditure.

He has proven it many times on the track in the tt and on the grand tours.

I think he'll be back for another go, it'll irk him that he didn't go further than Rominger.
The distance set yesterday might just tempt Martin and Cancellara but as already mentioned, they've got a lot of learning to do. Monstering a gear round like Martin does will be a killer on a track, and unfortunately all the rule changes have come about five years too late to catch Cancellara at his best.

I was totally absorbed yesterday with Brads attempt. Spent all day in eager anticipation turned ecstatic when he broke the record.
Truly most awesome.

Whilst Alex broke the record he did do it in Manchester stating LVelo weren't that helpful when it came down to organisation, so it bears truth that with Sir Brad's attempt all roadblocks were easily removed.
I would like Alex to have another crack but honestly can't see him having another go until next year now. Road commitments mean his season will be full, Brads coming to the end of his Road work now and is already in preparation for Track events and training. But this does open up for other riders, not necessarily Road Guys either.. what about Ed Clancy ? Tony Martin's a good call for an attempt but again he'll be Road based for the foreseeable which leaves a Winter attempt.. which with the general Low Pressure systems over Northern Europe at this time could mean a Swiss location/attempt totally viable.
I'm a total fanboy when anything Fabulous Candelabra's concerned, but an Hour attempt ? Sadly I don't think so now. Like Voght he's edging towards his latter years on the Road, and without a Track background, I feel he'll be at a loss when the sheer mental drain towards the end of the attempt will kick in like most of Fab's attempts at hacking off the front he'll back off slightly and that'll be enough for the attempt to sadly fail.

But this a a superb Pure event, long may the protagonists come forward and clip in.
