MrsIHN has a Dawes Duchess shopper for scooting about town. Thing is, it's starting a habit of dropping the chain, which becomes more of a pain as it then gets trapped behind the chainguard and getting it back on becomes a pretty dirty, fiddly job.
It's 7-spd Shimano Tourney at the rear, cheapo single 42t crank at the front. Any ideas as to why it might have started and what I can do about it? It doesn't get a huge amount of TLC and the gear cable and outer is probably in need of changing, but would that be a factor? I can't imagine the chain/chainset is that worn as it doesn't do massive mileage and the chain's a chunky old bugger.
Check chainring for bent teeth. Could also be a crappy chainline.
Tak the guard off and ride it a bit, it may become obvious
Yeah, I was thinking chainline, as I have a feeling it does it more often when she's in the smallest cog at the back. Bent tooth is a good shout though, I'll check.
What about cheapy mech not maintaining enough tension in the chain?
More likely to be chainline / bent teeth / chainring than rear mech because the chainring is pulling the chain forward. Bent / knackered mech more likely to be a rear shifting problem.
sounds like she needs a narrow wide chainring and a chain device, check her browser history for Danny MacAskill videos
If it's mostly in the smallest sprocket, is the chain too slack at that point? Maybe remove some links.
Have you tried youtubing how to fix gears. Iirc GMBN has done one recently and very useful it is too.
rather than spash money on new parts where it probably doesn’t actually need them.

This is not a bad shout too, I'll check that.
Tell her to stop hitting those 4ft drops on the way back from Tesco's.
Draggy freehub maybe?
