got some wide shimano shoes. bit old and tatty now, so I need something new.
so spd compatible, NO racing sole, good for walking about whilst touring.
seen giro terraduro, they are nice.
any others worth a look?
I've heard Mavic being mentioned as being good for wide feet. Sidi do their Mega fit but they're rather expensive and tend to be XC / race stiff. I have size 8H (H for Hobbit apparently ) feet and still have ot size up with Shimano so am also looking for another brand that does a wider fit.
I have a pair of Shimano XM5 shoes. I find them quite wide: for comparison, I take the Mega width fitting in Sidi shoes, and I have to go up a size in Northwave boots.
The XM5s (and the XM7 boot version) have Vibram soles.
I have only used them a few times, but so far I am pleased with the XM5s. The only things I would have preferred were different in the design would have been:
a. that the tongue was a few millimetres longer, because the laces tie very close to the top of the tongue, even though there is no liklihood of them rolling over the top of the tongue. However, this might just be a matter of manufacturing variation.
b. the shoe was cut just a little lower where it sits below my ankle bone on the inside face. I have noticed sometimes that I can feel my ankle bone on the side of the shoe: so far it's not causing any trouble or pain, and if it does I think a thicker insole would be the answer. Being a boot design, the XM7s presumably would not have this issue because the boot material extends well above the ankle.
Ton - as a side, what was your issue with the adidas terrex you sold recently? Are they a small size 12 as Adidas can be? Asking as I'm roughly your size and fancy some for ride to work shoes.
As for this query - Northwave have a wide toe box area, size up fairly true and their latest range looks like they should fit the bill.

they were very narrow. wore them a couple of times and ended up with a blister on both little toes.
also tried the xm9 both, which was a good wide fit, but the collar rubbed my fused ankle raw. so a no goer too.

My mistake, I meant I've got the XM7 shoes. Given the boot version was a good fit for you, but the problem was the high collar, maybe it would be worth getting a pair of the XM7 shoes from Wiggle to try.
With regard to my own concern about feeling the top of the inside face of the shoe just below my ankle bone, I've just checked the removable insoles in the shoes, and they are the usual very thin type, and I think there is plenty of room inside the shoe to accommodate a thicker insole, like the Sorbothane type used in walking boots.
Ton - I always find Shimano too narrow. The only ones that aren't are the XM9.
I am also afflicted with pasty-feet. My default is always Northwaves. I've had a few pairs now. Nice wide fit, uber-comfy, and the added bonus of being properly made bits of kit which last for ages!
Oh... and I am going to get round to finishing off your illustration mate. Just needs a pub in there. I've been snowed under of late. Sorry 😀
Pretty sure Lake make shoes in both regular and wide fitting.
Spesh Tahoe?
Sue's got some (previous model), just that bit wider than my Shimanos.
Great everyday shoes, she wears them for everything but the MTB.
Last well too.
Had some of the Northwave (Missions?) a few years ago which lasted for ages on the mtb - wide, well made, tough.
I was looking at those XM7s yesterday. Good vibram sole, and you can remove/re-attach the rubber cover, depending on whether you're using cleats or not. I'm not sure about the width though, since they don't import my size 🙁
another thing that did not suit me with the xm9 was that the cleat did not go far enough back. it felt like I was riding on my toes.
even considered drilling out the cleat slots to extend them when I had the shoes.
changed my mind and sold em on.
I have got excessively broad feet - find that the Vaude ones I bought are brilliant. Mine are non-SPD but they seem to have SPD ones in the range too.
If you can find some near you they are worth checking out.
Shimano M089 SPD Mountain Bike Shoes - Wide Fit

I have the wide fitting Giro Privateer HV. Cheaper than the Terraduro.
lake. excellent build quality IME too.
teef, I have those now. bit buggered tho.
Specialised suit my square feet. They don't go too narrow at the end.
Terraduro HV are pretty good. I'm normally a 45, went for a 46 HV which fits thick sealkins in without cramping. Possibly too large with thin socks. Non HV/Normal Giro 45 is tight with thin roadie socks.

I've got these but I wouldn't say they're particularly wide. Still had to size up two sizes in them.
