As title, down to trying to get my cockpit lower on a tall headtubed bike, I'm looking at wide and flat handlebars but I'm worried about not liking the zero upsweep?

I know I can tell the difference between 8/4 and 9/5 back/upsweep bars and I know what they're achieving, but what is it like to have No upsweep whatsoever?

Rolling them forward would sort of be defeating the object as you're gaining rise and losing backsweep?

I've not done the maths, but I'd imagine rolling bars up 5degrees would lose only a tiny fraction of the backsweep.

And likewise, rolling the bars you've got back by 5 degrees (and tweaking the controls to suit) will also have a negligible impact on backsweep.

If bars have no rise, there is no distinction between upsweep and backsweep, they just have sweep.  Some flat bars like the Fleegle have a forward kink so the grip area is level with the clamp rather than behind it, meaning there would be no rise effect as you rotated the bars forward.  But most flat bars don't do this.  Back in the day folk put risers on upside down.  But you'd get downsweep then, not to everyone's taste.

Any reason you can't lower the stem instead? Either by changing the stem or flipping the one you already have?

So with most flat bars you cannot achieve any upsweep without a tad extra height.  But you're talking a cm or less.  Just a matter of what you prefer to compromise - your ideal hand height or your ideal hand angle.

I've never really understood people worrying about upsweep. Surely you rotate the bars until they feel comfortable for you. What the numbers are isn't important.

As suggested above, is it possible to lower the bars by flipping the stem? That, plus moving spacers around usually lets you fine tune the height, then you can rotate the bars to get the sweep how you like it.

Even risers with listed up and back sweep only have those figures when installed exactly how the manufacturer intended, I always seem to have them much further forward.

I always have my bars rotated forward a bit, so the sweep is about 30 degrees to horizontal.  I also do this with Fleegles, and it does result in a little extra height but it's all about changing the angle of the grip.

The angle of bars is a key variable in getting the fit and feel of a bike right.  And it's quick and free to change.

I had totally flat bars, exotics I think. ****ing awful. Rolled them forwards but as you say that turns backsweep into up, and then it didn't have enough of either.

"Any reason you can’t lower the stem instead? Either by changing the stem or flipping the one you already have?"

Stem flipped and slammed already. Its on a just that bit too tall head-tubed bike. I'd like to up the forks travel (internally) by 10mm too ..
Its compounded by an upper headset that has a conical top cap/spacer that is designed as part of the sealing. I've yet to have a proper look of whats out there (44mm), but there ought to be scope to lose 10mm stack height by swapping the upper headset assembly. In any case this might be an option in tandem with lower handlbebars
My options are swap of handlebars, though I'm already on 800 x 20mm, and if I'm forking out I want a touch wider. The options are somewhat limited. The Answer Pro Taper 810mm 0mm rise/flats look nice, but as above I'm worried about no upsweep
Reverse do a similar bar for cheap, but its heavier
Funn do a 7mm rise but with only 5deg backsweep and 2deg upsweep. It might appear to effectively be as the others but designed as rolled forward
Else its the Spank 800 x 5mm. No more width though, (no option of vibrocore) and I never quite got on with my 8/4deg angled 777 spanks. 9/5deg bontrager/shimano I get on with
