Just wondering if anyone had any experience of successfully fitting a gnarly rear tyre on the Whyte T129 SCR. Its tight for clearance and whilst i'm sure the 2.2 maxxis summer tyres they come with are fine for dry conditions, i'm after something with grip.
Ive currently got a Specialized Purgatory on it (just), but they are nearing the end of their useful life and i'm wanting something with bags of grip. I'm looking at the Continental mountain king 2.2, but some report it as coming up big (a luxury i dont think i'll get away with).
If anyone has any experience they'd like to share it would be much appreciated before i splash the cash and realise my mistake.
Thanks
Mountain King 2.2 are more like 2.0 in reality. Have a look here for accurate measurements:

A 2.2" MK2 is just under 2.1" across its width on a 23mm internal rim (yes I measured one!). I had a T-129 SCR last year, and this was about the biggest tyre I could reasonably get in there, before the mud clearance became laughable. If you go for the Black Chilli protection version it's pretty grippy and rolls ok, but it's not especially tough. I put a big hole in one, pinch flatting it on a rock (despite running 40psi in it!) 2nd time out! If you're more careful than me though they're not a bad tyre.
Got another tyre that's one ride old if you were after one...
Thanks guys.
How much are you after for it mboy?
Is it the 240tpi protection black chilli model you're selling?
I'm liking the Hutchison Toro on the back of my codeine paired with a magic Mary front. Rolls well and grips well enough as far as I'm concerned. I've got the hard skin version, no problems thus far
I got a Gato 2.3 in there, the normal folding one.
Just got a wild gripr 2.25 and I have minimal mud clearance with 25mm internal rim, 2.1 would be grand and its a great bit of rubber.
I thought the SCR had a load more room than the standard ones?
I have a 2.25 Nobby Nic in my standard one and just had to dish the wheel over slightly.
Another Purg. Or storm 2" for mud.
T129 SCR Works here.
Maxxis Beaver 2.2- ace tyre. Clears easily from mud and gives plenty of clearance around the CS. Grips nicely on everything apart from very polished surfaces.
I've tried Spec Purgatory and MKII in the back. None of them had the clearance or the grip close to the Beaver.

I think that what most ppl expected (and what happened on other SCR models IIRC), but ain't the case for the t-129, what it is.. is supposedly stiffer than the std model.
Rides like a beast though.
Out of interest what is the worst thing that can happen with running rubber with only about 5mm of clearance?

Absolutely, awesome bike for what it is, but...

If you ride on "natural" trails most of the time, any mud will cause it to clog up. I loved how mine rode, was annoyed that even with a 2.1" tyre it used to get clogged up too readily on my normal trails, even in May! If it had 5mm longer chainstays, or the main pivot was 5mm further forward, there wouldn't be any issue at all though so it's probably easily rectified for a new model year.
Mountain King 2.2 on my SCR 29r , not clogged up yet !
Beaver's are ace in most conditions.
If it helps anyone, I tried a Mavic Quest 2.35 (on Crossmax XLs) and it fouled the non-drive side chain stay, by a millimetre or so, I think the Bontrager Mud 29er tyres x 2.0 should be aok fine, will try those after running the stock WTBs.
Have had a 2.25 nobby nic on for last 6 months and happy with the clearance. Still enjoying the bike.
I run a Mountain King 2.2 from Conti. Fits perfectly well in my T-129 Works. Really durable great cornering and grip. Actually had two Maxxis on the front in the time I've had this on the back ( not a Maxxis gripe, I love them) Got the 'Protection' type, bit heavier but seems to be pretty bomb proof. I run it with a tube as I heard that Conti tyres don't seal as well as some when tubeless (haven't tried so wouldn't know)
I know this is an old thread, is anyone on here using a maxxis beaver 2.2? I've been running a specialized purgatory 2.2 but with my new flow ex rims, the clearance is too tight.
Any other suggestions s for the next 2 months or so of slop? It needs to be quite sturdy for my local trails.
Cheers
When I had my '15 T129 SCR I ran the 2.2 Beaver. I really rate the tyre. Cuts nicely through mud and clears well. Casing is also really robust and setting up tubeless was easy. Tyre clearance was actually really good too.
I actually ended up running the tyre into summer too, because it was pretty good on dusty trails. It's limited by hardpack, but then if you've got a good front tyre, that will mitigate it a bit.
Thanks. I'll get one ordered and hope that it's narrower than the purgatory.
Get pissed of with tight fitting of WTB Bronson 2.2 on 21mm internal SSC Sentinel rim and went for 650b WTB i35 ASYM and 2.8 Trailblazer rubber.
Things are much better now.
Cheers!
I.
