Do you own one and how have you got on with it?
I’m changing frames as my long travel bike is too short. I have a short travel bike which I use for most stuff and will most likely continue to do so.
My only concern is that a lot of the reviews say the G160 isn’t a good climber. What do you think having owned one?
I know it’s a long travel bike more orientated to downhill but how is it for a full day in the mountains?
Thanks.
I dont own one but a mate has one and is impressed with it. Its not going to be the fastest bike on the climbs but i wouldnt let that put you off. Also Whyte seem a good company to buy from, mate had a few issues with his and they basically replaced and upgraded pretty much everything on his bike for free. Cant say fairer than that!
Thanks. I actually have the WHYTE T129rs for trails and it’s very similar geo to the G160 and as long as I get in the right position it climbs fine. I would like to try a Bird Aeris but I get on with the Whyte’s so well. It’s taken me ages to find a design that really works for me.
Love mine to bits, though I don’t ride it that much as I can’t get my lad off it. Seems to climb fine to me, but I’m not the best at going uphill! Had absolutely no problems at all with it.
Got the works model for nearly 2 grand off list price so really good value for a very capable and top spec bike.
Love mine (an S) As far as I'm concerned it climbs just fine, it's not an XC climber sprinting up those techy climbs but if you jut want to be able to grind/spin your way to the top of a hill in order to have fun on the way back down it's fine.
I have upgraded/changed a few things and have yet more on a list still to do but not because it HAD to be done but because I wanted to.
Oh and the low BB means you do need to be aware of your pedal stroke as it's quite easy to strike with.
I own a 160 and have done for the last 12 months coming from Alpine Five 29er and a Five before that. Now disclaimer .
Truth be told if I had known the S150 was due out I would have waited the extra 3 months BUT don't let this sway you in any way
I bought the g160 rs over an Alpine 6 mainly because of the costing £2900 (cash over £4300 for the Alpine ) same spec build ,xo Eagle Lyriks ect .. The way Whyte have delt with problems in the past also had a big part in it as their customer service levels are brilliant ..even to the point after 3 months owning the headset bearings failed and Whyte did a 1/2 /12 with me on a new Hope headset rather than replacing with their own (FSA) .And their life bearings help when the times comes to swap them out
The bike.. even though I still covert the Cs150rs the G160 never and I mean never but a foot wrong and always leaves me with a smile on my face beit the way I can climb and (as friends call it ) Danny Mc it over techy climbs and its ability to just climb well now maybe that's the 1x12 eagle or the fact that the original Rockshox Monarch rt3 was swapped for a piggyback RC3 Hv I wouldn't like to say but I never had issues with either when it came to pointing upwards .
The good part ..down . Pointing the bike downhill is what most people are interested in and as I said before its never left me feeling disappointed ,and I will say I did demo an Alpine 6 and Bronson before making my purchase. Its a long bike for a Large some 660 top tube and close to 1240 wheelbase but that only helps matters, in the past 13 months of riding it ,it has seen massive lakes descents including NanBeild yesterday where I only chucked a foot out once its that confidence educing. In short I think its a fantastic bike backed by Whytes customer service levels .
BUT! As I own a plus bike the thought of the S150 appeals to me with the switch of the wheelset 29 or 27.5 x3.
Thanks folks that’s really helpful.
I've got a T-129 and a G160. The 160 doesn't climb anywhere near as well as the 129 but the 129 is an amazing climber. I'm not quick up the hills but I get up most things on the 160, my cousin has one too and was pretty much quickest up all climbs on a holiday with most people on 160mm bikes. He's pretty fit though.
The 160 came with a semi slick Minion on the back, it climbed quicker before I swapped it out but it now brakes much better at the rear. It handled surprisingly well though with the semi slick in all conditions.
The faster it gets the better it is, I've come unstuck a few times but mostly once I've lost confidence and not carrying speed.
Apart from the low BB I don't notice a massive difference jumping between each bike for position/reach.
If I didn't have one of the early (double chainset) T-129s which flexes a fair bit (doesn't help with my weight!) those two would be pretty much my ideal two options to have in the garage. Remove the flex and I would be completely happy. Wouldn't have the G160 on it's own though, it makes red routes pretty boring as it's so competent.
I would recommend the T129 single ring version if you can find one it’s the best bike I’ve owned but also the only one that’s fitted me so well. Also the strongest stiffest feeling Bike I’ve had although there does seem to be the usual 29er wheel flex from the rear if you pile it through rock gardens. Really good all rounder.
I have the G160RS with a few mods. Amongst other riding, I used it in the Swiss Alps last summer and also on the British Heart Foundation's South Downs Way in a day challenge. It handled both with equal confidence and it's a pleasure to ride. I did upgrade the wheelset to a pair of sixth element carbons on Hope hubs with Magic Mary front and Rock Razor rear (I really didn't like the Minion it came with on the rear) and that improved both uphill and downhill performance - uphill also benefitted from the weightloss. The rest of the spec is impeccable really and as someone else says I've done other mods for my own satisfaction rather than necessity. Mine now has Hope E4's, Renthal Carbon35 FatBar Lite, Hope stem - but I wouldn't have invested in it if the basic bike wasn't worth it. It has never, ever let me down in any circumstances. Low BB is my only gripe but that's a matter of taste. The 160 never seemed to get the reviews it deserved in my opinion - my review would be agile and bulletproof and a great all-day partner over any terrain.
Sounds good! If I get a frame it’ll be getting all the carbon goodies put on it off my other bike including the Chinese carbon rims I built up which have been fine.
