Hi,

Does anyone have any experience changing cables in this dropper? I have a Whyte hardtail with internal routing and this dropper post. The cable has snapped right at the point it joins to a barrel shaped bit of metal that hooks to the bottom of the dropper.

I can't figure out if it's even possible to hook out the cable (pushing the lever end does nothing). Even if I do get it out, will a replacement gear cable that I have work?

Is this a "local bike shop job" just because the cable routing is awkward and the cable appears to be a special part? Seems like a waste / simple enough that it should be fixable at home...

Droppers use a regular gear cable - can you push the outer from the trigger end so that you can see it inside the seat tube? If you can grab it, then rethreading the cable should be straight-forward. Detach the trigger from the bars, attach everything together, tighten the cable and make sure it actuates the dropper before you put the post back in. Pull the outer cable back out as you insert the post and refit trigger to bars. It’s more of a fiddly job than a difficult one.

This appears to have a barrel shaped end that's bigger than a normal cable end thing. Like this:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/284372802068?chn=ps&_trkparms=ispr%3D1&amdata=enc%3A1wz8Oz6v3Qu6Ip5DFWinfhA56&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=710-134428-41853-0&mkcid=2&itemid=284372802068&targetid=293946777986&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=1007031&poi=&campaignid=17116423086&mkgroupid=134652533165&rlsatarget=pla-293946777986&abcId=9300856&merchantid=115513727&gclid=CjwKCAjwh-CVBhB8EiwAjFEPGcaVAWJzxmXEPqGuAkOPLmtOuNHcmzmTLZMSHJKrw7vrWLM0Vn7zgxoC3eAQAvD_BwE

If I push the outer from the trigger end, there's a cm or two of movement but no action in the down tube, like it's snagged. I could yank the inner cable out of the whole thing, and introduce a new one...
Reckon I could attach that thing from ebay onto the end of it?

Plenty of how-to videos on YouTube - have you taken the post out to see what’s happened? Might just be a case of tightening up the cable?

Plenty of replacement dropper post nipples for sale online, but you need to know whether you need a grub screw type or one that takes a gear cable nipple.

Does it use a brake cable rather than a gear cable?

What's the difference between a gear and brake cable? I didn't know there was one.

I can't tighten the cable, because it has snapped. hard to tell if it had a nipple/end thingy as well as that barrel shaped nut. I have the old one, with a remnant of the cable in it. Can't see if it can be re-used or not.

Yes I have removed the post to see what happened. That's how I knew it had snapped at the point it joins the base of the post.

I have the same dropper I think and have changed the cable several times (and the lever).

Should be a standard gear cable, nipple at the post end, bolted at the trigger. Unbolt the trigger end and pull through the snapped inner (prob pull the tidiest end through so it doesn't snag).

New gear cable then feeds through the exiting outer from the post end. If you need to you can take the trigger off the bars to give you a bit more slack with the outer.

Or is the outer damaged too?

Some progress. I've been able to remove the old cable remnant from the barrel-shaped end that connects to the bottom of the post. At least I can re-use that.

Based on the non-movement of the outer, my only option is to pull out the old cable towards the trigger end, push in a new one, connect it to the barrel thing and to the post. This all supposes I have enough cable/slack to do this without moving the outer (because it doesn't seem to be moving at all). I don't think it's going to move without taking out the BB.

Hard to tell if the outer is damaged. It appears to be rust that got to the cable where it exited the outer and connected to the post. I imagine pulling out the old cable isn't going to do the outer much good...

Thanks for replies...
