Looking at a Whyte CS 29er and just wondered if anyone had seen any weight figures for the bare carbon frame(same frame for C/CS/Team)? Also the weight for the carbon wheels that come with the CS and Team, are they that light?
The bikes look ok spec, but is there potential to upgrade if the frame/wheels are not so light?
Cheers
The frame is mega light. Used to work in a Whyte dealer, rep popped by with a bare frame one day and on the Park Scales in the workshop, the medium frame (without seatclamp or bottle cage bolts) was under 1100g! You're looking at top flite Scott Scales and the like to get much lighter than that...
The carbon wheels are pretty light too. Of course you could go lighter still, but they're MUCH stiffer than a lot of super light ally rims, which IMO, is more important.
I've had a go on a 29C Team, and importantly, it's a 10kg bike that can be ridden hard. There are lighter bikes out there, but crucially they normally have much weaker/flexier components on them to achieve that weight. 10.5kg for the CS version is an impressive figure anyway. You'll see that the extra 500g weight saving of the Team is by careful component selection, including a carbon seatpost, XT instead of SLX etc.
Personally I'd not bother changing anything until it wore out. They're awesomely fast bikes, really would love one myself!
mboy, many thanks for feedback. Ive ridden the scale and was wondering how they compared. v similar I should think!
Cheers
1.23kg for a medium frame. A mate is a Whyte dealer (Erin Bike hut, IOM) and put this photo on FB this avvy.
