Hey all,

Havent been on here for ages, three children seem to suck any spare time away! lol . Anyway, decided I wanted to get back into it, and wanted a straight forward hardtail which could take a bit of punishment and a Whyte 901 came up locally which I have purchased.

Only had a quick scoot up and down my road on it to make sure all seemed well, and all good but have a few questions about current preferences as Im a bit out of the loop these days.

My old bike has slx cranks and XT brakes, shifters and mechs, all in good nick and I have always been a shimano person, happy with the brakes particularly.  The purchased bike has Formula RS3 brakes, front of which has no stoppage at all, feels like needs bled completely, and the rear felt quite rough.  My question is, is it worth taking my XT brakes, and possibly the SLX cranks onto the new bike?    Its currently got the standard 2x10 Sram x-9 rear mech, x-5 front mech and x-5 shifters, so don t know how these compare to XT kit.

Also, its got 26 x 2.1 maxxis Advantage on at the moment, and I wanted to see what the max tyre width is that I could pop on there?  Was running 2.35 on my old bike and would like to go even bigger if possible.

As usual, any advice much appreciated and its good to be looking at biking stuff again! 🙂

If you're happy with the drivetrain on your old bike, then move it all over and sell the X9 drivetrain complete if it's in good nick. No reason you can't swap the brakes.

I'd be surprised if you couldn't run up to 2.4 tyres on your rims - in the end it depends on internal width of the rims as to how well they'd work. Don't know what the width of the stock Whyte rims is.

Don't know what year yours is, but as you mention 26, I'm guessing a few years. I've got a '16 650b 901 and the rear clearance is, well, it's shit. I couldn't get a 2.4 HR2 on i21 rims on it. Even the front 2.3 Ardent was buzzing the stays when I put it on the rear.
