I keep getting horrendous sharp pains in my thigh and quads at the start of every ride. For the first few miles it's agony. Now I have had a knee arthroscopy (knee debridment) now I know I'll have some pain but it's in both legs. And if I rest for a few days it's even worse the first ride back.

I thought it maybe crap diet or lack of water but I drink plenty of water and maybe a can or two of diet cola now and again. Any ideas.

Do you stretch before riding?

Good. You should never stretch cold muscles.

Try going to see a sports masseur. Did wonders for my calves.

Is probably your legs warming up then. When I go for a road ride the first 10 miles or so are usually so painful I consider going home early.

Then there must be something seriously wrong with your set up or are you hammering it right from the start?!

How is your bike/pedal cleat set up?
Can you get someone who knows what they're doing to check it?

I'm sure there is something wrong with the setup, my road bike is a POS. Well that and I am pretty unfit.

Lightman use flat pedals. And seats adjusted properly. Got a ever so slight bend. The first few miles burn and it's like a total lack of energy. Then after 2/3 miles or if I stop for 10 mins their fine. It's annoying because the first mile or two is flat road riding and one uphill
