What's the point of this?

https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/bottom-brackets/sram-dub-bottom-bracket-preload-adjuster-kit/

I bought a bike with what I now know to be one of these fitted between the left crack and BB. Other than acting as a spacer, what's the purpose? Are they universally needed on SRAM BB/cranks - i.e. are the cranks wider than the BB?

It's not a spacer, it's a preload adjuster... ...

If I honestly had to guess it would be that the tolerances for BB across varying types is too broad so they're solving specification issue.

Xtr [and various others] used to have them for normal BB shells back in the day too iirc and I think they're normal on bb30.

They do the same job as the plastic bolt thing on shimano cranks.

Isn't this just the SRAM equivalent of the little screw cap thing in the end of Shimano hollowtech crank axle etc?

IT's pre-load adjuster for the BB bearings, M9100 series XTR has one also due to them being different to the other current Hollow Tech II cranks in terms of fitment.

This.

They sell it as a spare because its easily damaged by overtightening the 2.5mm hex bolt.

Pretty sure Cane Creek do replacement aluminium ones in different colours.

As do many others on ebay. Pointless bling, but oooooh shiny

Shiny - yes.
Pointless Bling - No.

I found that the plastic SRAM one was almost impossible to keep tight which resulted in the BB spindle wearing out faster than I would have liked on an expensive SRAM crankset.

I bought one of the Cane Creek pre loaders and its much, much better. I ham-fistedly rounded the bolt on the Cane Creek one and they sent me a complete replacement (preloader and bolt) free of charge without any questions.
