I`m going nuts trying to get a new chain to work, so if you know what youre doing any advice would be much appreciated. My chain was knackered, so I bought a sram pc791 to replace it. I cant get it to run right though, even though i shortened it to the same number of links as my old one had (106 i think). It runs fine in 1st and 2nd gear, and 7th through 9th gears, really smooth, but anywhere between 3rd gear and 6th and it keeps jumping and skipping. This is the 2nd time ive tried to change a chain and the 2nd time ive encountered the same issues, so even though my cassette looks pretty worn on 2nd through 6th gears, im inclined to think its more likely to be something ive done wrong. Any ideas?
I'd go for the old stretched chain wearing out the cassette on the most used cogs - sorry! Did you check the old one with a stretch measurer?
I recently changed the chain on my old Rockhopper after....er...hum 10 years!! Ended up also replacing the cassette and the middle chainring.
Classic knackered cassette new chain problem. The mot used cogs are in the middle and as you describe they are worn .You need a new cassette .Hopefully your chainrings are ok otherwise it gets pricey.
Actually I was pleasantly surprised that my deore m590 middle ring cost €12!
my front rings are pretty new, i bought new ones a couple of months back...probably because my knackered chain wore them out haha. i reckon i`ll order a new cassette and see how i get on, the middle cogs are pretty wrecked. i take it the old chain works on the wrecked cassette because theres such a ridiculous amount of play that it doesnt skip. cheers for helping folks!
