Looking at a bigger route in the area but fancied following as much of the WHW as possible, for old time's sake.
Last time I rode it (over 10yrs ago I think) I remember the Conic Hill section being sort of grassy/muddy track gradually getting rockier towards the top but all still relatively rideable on the MTB.
I remember the descent being loose, steep and stepped in places?
I have no appetite for anything boggy, fiddly or gnarly as part of a long gravel ride so just wondering if I should skip it, what is the path like these days?
Ta
It's as rough as **** these days tbh, from the summit down to the steps, climb up from Drymen side is fine.
There's a grassy path that leads down from the top along the ridge straight ahead towards the Loch, as opposed to turning SW at Bealach ard (about 200m elev.), take that instead, brings you down at the old manse, then go left to take you back into Balmaha and on your way.
Hmm... thanks, I'm getting carpal tunnel already just thinking about it.
Throw in some wet autumnal leaves, possible cold hands, cantilever brakes (my decision, I stand by it!) and the remaining lochside singletrack to Cashel and I think Conic is worth skipping. There's actually a good option to drop down before you leave the forest as you approach from Drymen, so will do that (it's the route they ask dog walkers to take during lambing season).
Aye, up through the woods, then keep on the forestry road through Garadh ban forest nad either peel off down into MoB or carry on along WHW and peel off left at the bridge before the conic climb.
Not really missing much except the views going up Conic.
