A slight balls-up in ordering at the LBS has resulted in me giving gripshift a go for the first time. I won't get a chance to try it until Friday - anyone got any experiences with it? Looks like a lot of them failed early on but that there was a revision. Tell me your stories of prolonged and happy usage please!
My 6 year old son, ok it's not XX1 but it's SRAM, he wants Shimano XT triggers like Daddy. :wink
Edit: on a serious note I'd be interested too, I love the simplicity of it.
Both my kids have got gripshift. In fact my eldest has got x0 9 speed on hers. I've never ridden properly with it though. I'm a bit anxious about being able to change gear whilst braking. Not sure if I should be.
I used X0 gripshift for a couple of years, they're grand, I vastly preferred them to the SRAM trigger shifters that they replaced. I still use the old x-ray ones on my 1990s Marin commuter, they're basically indestructable. If I was going for XX1 I'd probably go with the gripshift option I think.
Have x0 and xx and all good but not found the need to go to xx1 yet
I've got it, it works well, you can shift multiple gears in one go, it's very positive. Only thing I don't like is that the 'carbon' cover rattles slightly, feels cheap.
Lighter than triggers too.
All sat in boxes ready to be fitted, when the carbon wheels are ready....ordered wrong spokes 😕
Running XO ones here and run X9 ones before. So much better than triggers for all bar proper DH. The ability to get from one end of the cassette to the other very quickly is great.
Had to change to gripshift due to hand damage and i was surprised at how much i prefer them, lighter with less moving parts and sticky out things to break or go wrong, ive used the same set on my last 3 bikes and their still perfect, HTH
Running X0 9 speed, if there is a choice on my neext bike I'd do the same.
Simple, consistent performance, shrug off impacts.
I don't think I've ever felt the need to change gear whilst braking so I can't comment, but as you can dump a bunch of sprockets in one twist after braking it's not something I've ever thoguht I'd need to do either.
Very tolerant of nasty cables too, I guess you've got so much more torque using your whole hand so they just don't go stiff.
You ordered triggers, you should get triggers.
I was using XO 9 speed gripshift for a very long time and absolutely loved it. As a concept gripshift is awesome. I tried out XX1 grip shift on a friend's bike and for some reason there wasn't that same quality feel. That and the huge amount of failures you can read about, particularly on MTBR, were enough to switch me to triggers for XX1. I'm not aware that SRAM have made any major revisions and the pics on the big MTBR thread show the internals are much more flimsy and plasticy compared to the older XO 9 speed shifters which presumably is contributing to the failures.
The triggers are really rather nice and there are matchmakers available to pair with most brakes. Once you ditch the heavy stock SRAM bar clamp and go for a matchmaker there isn't much in it weight-wise compared to the gripshift. The only thing I miss is multiple shifts down the cassette in one go but the "button" rather than "lever" feel shifting to a smaller sprocket is a nice compensation.
Both are great option but personally the cheaper feel and large number of horror stories were enough to put me off gripshift for XX1
