Interesting one to start with?! Train the same way you would for any endurance race, but get plenty of experience in training of doing back to back hard days. It it were me I'd enter something like Trailmasters trans wales repalcement or Black Mountains 3 day to get a feel for back to back racing.

Presumably you've got altitude issues to cope with in Nepal too? Interesting. If you want Top 20, you'd better hope there's less than 20 Nepalese riders. 😉

HungryMonkey - I am an exercise physiologist and I do a fair amount of consultancy and applied sports science 'stuff' with a range of athletes - including ultra-endurance and stage racers. If you want some assistance with your training and preparation drop me an email.

haha, yeah, hope there'll be less 😉 its something to aim for, but perhaps slightly unrealistic (only 100 entries total)

as for altitude, it goes no higher than 1900m (iirc) and i live in the alps. i think the road bike will be getting a good thrashing from march onwards.

would like to do some other shorter events, but this is going to cost a chunk of cash, which i don't really have (yet!).

...cool! I see you live in the alps - don't let the distance thing concern you - I currently work with athletes who live in Finland, Israel and France (along with the UK) - there are ways and means!

Get on your bike & ride a lot.
Work out how to feed yourself, that crucial. Find something that you know you can rely on. That won't make you feel sick, no matter how tired you are. If you cant eat you're screwed.
Ride a few marathons. Then ride some BIG back to back rides. Ride a shorter mulit-stage race if you can, it's great prep for you, your bike & your gear.
Be realistic about your expectations. 1st time out? Aim to finish, it's a lot harder than you think, a lot harder........

Ps see you there 😉

LabMonkey - i've an idea about something too... I'll drop you an email tomorrow and we'll see if we can work something out 🙂

flange100 - £400 entry, flights ~600, visa £20, insurance 40-50 i reckon. few mates are going out too, and i've some work contacts out there (mtb, kayak, trekking and rafting), so am going to stay for 2-3 weeks i reckon.

1st proper race will be 10 under the ben, but hoping to do christalp again, tour de ben again, few sportives etc, and a mate is setting up a road holiday company here in the alps, so am going to try and get on his 'tester' week... as i said though, this is going to take up a lot of my budget for the year - no fat bike for me!

mrlebowski - see you on the start line 😉

Great stuff - I won't likely be able to respond till the evening as I have a client In my lab in the morning (over from Nice - small world) and then we are off out for a training ride and (coffee and cake meeting) in the afternoon - its a rock'n'roll life! But, I will get back to you - promise!

How did you find the Christalp? Am thinking about giving it a bash this year although entry looks a little expensive.

i really enjoyed it - course isn't too heavy on singletrack and there were queues to get onto it (its a BIG event), but the atmosphere was incredible, all the villagers were out shouting your name (its on your number board), the feedstations were good, great organisation (its swiss...), just fantastic really! definitely plan on doing it again, hopefully this year.

Didn't Matt Hart do this a couple of years ago? Read the article he wrote about it in Singletrack for starters, then make friends and pick his brain remorselessly 😉
