Just popping on a tyre on my front wheel, using brand new Geax ultralite tube, installed as per the norm started pumping it up and get to about 30-35psi i noticed the tyre bead coming out near the valve so stopped then a second or two later suddenly BANG....the tube explodes causing a 12" split down the tube.

What the hell, scared me a tad 😳

Can't think what i did wrong it seemed ok, do i trust these new tubes or leave well alone, second one is up fine.

you didn't have the bead of the tyre on properly. Just check it as you pump up.

Classic case of catching the tube under the bead of the tyre.

Tyre bead did seem tight near the valve as i couldnt initially push the valve fully out of the rim hole , maybe i didnt seat it properly.

Should i tighten the valve lockring first or after installed and pumped up, does it have a set distance it should clear the rim. (just trying to eliminate daftness).

The valve lockring is the last thing I do. Like you say, you should be able to push the valve almost fully into the uninflated tyre.

Do be careful not to rip the valve off the tube if you're being over-exuberant with the pumping tho 😳

After a spate of exploding tubeless tyres thanks to a buggered rim I'm ridiculously paranoid every time I have to inflate a tyre now. After fitting a new tyre to my road bike last week I actually did it in 2 stints - up to 50psi, left for a day, then finished it off, just in case! 😳

Don't know exactly, but in case it was a trapped tube try this; get the tube in place and inflate it a little bit BEFORE seating the tyre. Just enough to make it cylindrical - it's then much much harder to get it caught by tyre leavers or the tyre bead.

Did the same with a road tube the other day; was in a rush, powered it up to about 100psi and noticed the bulge. Popped the pump off and in a moment of stupidity decided to have a closer look , just went to push the valve and reduce the pressure and bang! instantly blind from the powdery stuff and ears ringing, it took a minute to register what had happened, and then i had a massive bout of the chuckles!

klumpy +1

The first bit of bead to seat should be the bit by the value, then work around in both directions.

Also put the value nut half-on, and push the value in a bit as this helps clear the tube from the bead near the value (where it usually gets jammed). Then tighten the valve nut after full inflation.
