Need (helpful) suggestions...
i think I "need" a disc brake crosser/commuter/roadbike/gnarmaccer
Want something light, fast and comfortable... my ideas at the moment are a Tripster or a Super-X, or for silly money a Santa Cruz Stigmata (but probably not, cos they are silly money and prob no better than a Super-X really)
Comments? suggestions? mockery?
Forum default suggestions of a Tripster ATR/Arkose should do you right.
The Tripster is a gorgeous thing. I think I need to have a close look at that thread about em.
But do I want carbon?
You need a fatbike! 🙂
Cannondale list the SuperX at 1.5kg, f&f, the Tripster frame probably weighs more.
That's what I'd have, I am a Cannondale fanboi tho,I've owned 3 road bikes and am considering a CAADX.
The SuperX is a flipping cool looking bike. Probably not as "pretty" as a tripster (though if you look in the gravel bike thread it looks like it is very easy to build an ugly one) but I suspect better if you want to get a wiggle on.
Thanks for throwing that in Al. I got a CAAD-x on the Cyclescheme a few years ago, and love it. Apart from the brakes - it was the year before they all went disc. Perfect fit and a nice ride, but nasty cheap wheels. So that's why the Super-x is up there.
Folk are gushing about the Tripster on that thread...
If it were me I'd go for a Tripster but I've always wanted a Ti bike.
How about a Shand Stoater?
I imagine many gushing about it have spent ££££ on one...or like the price tag and aspirational aspect of ti.
I've fallen out of love with ti I have to say, and even steel - alu and carbon for me (mostly, still like my Shand, and 80s 531 road singlespeed).
Salsa Warbird? Or perhaps a Cutthroat?
ooh! damn pricey though!
That Niner RLT in the classifieds is bloody lovely. My size too (don't know about you) but the Mrs would kill me.
Niner BSB or RLT if you're needing to run guards and racks. I'm a few thousand miles into mine:

Love the look of the bsb, especially the new lime green colouring
2016 Genesis Croix der fer Ti?
Got a kinesis pro6 f&f with Spesh pave post and a stem in 57 for sale soon. Great all rounder.
Cheers guys, this will be a new purchase. Niner looks rather tasty.
[edit]£1300 for that black one, wow... too big though!
Carbon Diverge?
(Cheeky bump)
Some fab ideas here, thanks all.
Edging towards the Tripster (normal BB!) but I do want hydro discs...
Tripster or a Super-X,
Curious pair. Want a bit of a do it all bike then Tripster. Want to go CX racing then Super X.
crosser/commuter/roadbike/gnarmaccer
Sounds like you want the Tripster.
I've been pondering the same, and stumbled across this, depends if you want guard mounts or not, but it's £750 less than the equivalent spec TCX and looks bad-ass.

so good I posted twice
Want to go CX racing then Super X
Not really. I have a CX bike now and they're good for EVERYTHING, not just CX racing 🙂

Thing is CX is now a very board brush and covers a whole gamut of bikes. Much like "road bikes" gets applied to everything from tourers to race bikes.
CX bikes are ok at lots of things I guess, but a CX race bike will be very good at CX racing and compromised in some way for most other applications. This may or may not bother you 🙂
In typical STW way "mine is the way to go" look at the GT grade range massive value for money. You can even play on mine before buying 😉

mrblobby - Member...but a CX race bike will be very good at CX racing
If this means a lack of braze ons or slightly different geometry, I fail to see how that's a benefit in cx racing.
This may or may not bother you
Not in the slightest. It's a bicycle 🙂
Thanks Rich! I think I'm not bothering about value 😀
the Shimano Hydraulic brakes are quite excellent, worth trying to get something with them on, or as an upgrade

Good point Al. I'm surprised manufacturers bother tweaking geometry and producing different bikes for different applications.
After riding my Arkose with shimano hydraulics on Tuesday I'm blown away by it, and them. I'd not consider anything else brakes wise. Ian's Tripster is lovely and I'd have one in a shot if I could afford it.
Do you want classic looks or shouty carbon? Norco Search is my favourite shouty one.
Do you want classic looks or shouty carbon?
Yes 🙂
Yeah MrBlobby, a cx race bike is so much faster for having fewer braze ons. A degree on the head angle will easily get you a few places.
the Shimano Hydraulic brakes are quite excellent, worth trying to get something with them on, or as an upgrade
Interesting - most have Sram Rival. Anyone have any experience of these?
I had to have a look at the ti Cross de Fer that Peter mentioned above.
I then found the Datum, and I really want one of those now. Start saving...
Oh sod it, I'll play.
I'd be checking out the new Scott...
I really like the Crux too, much fun to ride...
... but the builds are a bit rubbish. I'd wait for the 2016 ones with proper hydro discs.
Storck TIX if you want something a bit different...
Me Play Too..
How much have you got to spend?
If it really is a "do it all" type (since you have a CX'er) then I'd say go the Tripster route too or something from Shand. If it's more a CX/Gravel hard hack bike then the alloy TCX would fit the bill and come in at £1800. They come with guard clips and such so can be utilised for all sorts duties too and hey, look pretty.
Can't really see the point in spending loads on a proper CX'er if thats not really your thing, clearly you can (like me) and use it for other duties like long distance CX sportives and NCN blasts, mine does all that and long distance over night routes I put the Apidura seat bag and bar bag on for that, change tyres too.
But..
But....
What exactly do you want it for??
I'd have a Stigmata or a Tripster if funds allowed
Seeing as they didn't, and it would be used for commuting, local errands and use with the kids, the forum default Arkose was my next option. Mine's an Arkose 2
How much have you got to spend?
As much as I can justify to myself.. 😆
(Which discounts the one I really want - top of the range Stigmata!)
What exactly do you want it for??
Get rid of the current CX bike and the road bike and use it in place of them. I suppose it will mostly be used for 30+ mile-a-day commute, but swap the wheels and go gnarmac/adventuring.
tripster & set of spare set of wheels it is then. Shimano 105 hydraulic groupset build.
Just succumb already, stop playing hard to get.
Sorry to interrupt, if one was to have the same requirement as the OP, but had feet in the 'steel-is-real' camp - where would the collective hive point to? CdF? Others?

Then Sir your solution hits you smack in the face this (and many others) point out ^^
Prologue in Harrogate has a Tripster built up in a 54 for £2300.. off you go and buy it, then report back 😀
Recently got a Arkose 4 as a middling N+1. Immediately swapped the post, saddle, stem, bars, wheels and 50 ring.
Tripsters look great but what about an Enigma Etape or Burls equivalent if you don't want to be a Kinesis fanboi?
Did look at the stainless Croix Der Fer which looked very nice and elegant but over budget for what it'll be used for.

Ok. Where's Harrogate? 5 and a half hours away! 🙁

Pfft. That's easy!

I'd say CDF30, but thats because I have one 🙂
Enigma Etape
Now you've just delayed things!
Actually I forgot about the Shand Stoater, I really like those as well as the Tripster and the Stigmate
you coming on the DrP London to Brighton gnarmac and panty twanging ride next weekend?
54cm Tripster to fondle..
Unfortunately not, or I'd be fondling aplenty.
That RLT is nice! Might have to look further into that.
RM.
If you wanted steel of a comparable quality the Croix de Fer is not the way to go as it weighs many, many, many pounds. A Shand Stoater would be lovely.
Munrobiker, a stoater weighs less than a CdF??
Harrogate is in that Yoikshyre.. It's 4hrs from London for me and yet I can get there 🙄 (and 6 from sunny Hampshire Coast)
Theres this amazballz bit of tech called a telephone, and if you are dexterous enough there are buttons on it to press and you can listen and speak into it and you'd swear you are talking to God or something.
The reason I said it was there is because it's already built and has all the bits on you'll ever need, some nice bits, some shiny bits and it's been sitting under their widescreen TV for a couple of months so mebbies.. just mebbies they'll do some sort of deal on it..
ya
neva
knaa
d'ya.
HTH 😆
Yeah, certainly. (My phone appears to have no "buttons" though...). But I wanted to go and fondle it.
Munrobiker, a stoater weighs less than a CdF??
Possibly not but it is at least pretty enough to justify it's weight.
Then plan a day oooot with the wife/gf/kids/mom/dad/anyone who will go with you and take a day out to view it then.. 🙄
Take your trunks and visit the Spa Baths, then go to Mirrabells and have supper too.
Or, or take me and treat me 😀
Don't forget Betty's 🙂
Ohh yeah, tea n cake £60! Good Choice Sir 8)
Worth it though, DezB eh?
Eh?
DezB sounds like he can afford it 😉
Wish I'd not posted that bloody photo of the Scott. Every time I click on this thread, there it is tempting me 😕
That Scott has internal routing for a dropper post according to the road.cc review. Wonder how much.....
Dez... You can pop along add ride my tripster for a bit if you want?
DrP
Thanks DrP! Shall I bring the money for the BBB with me, or have you still not decided 😉

How about the newly announced Kona Roadhouse? More info
Thanks IMN, that looks good too and I have a bit of a soft-spot for Kona. Had a look at the Cotic Escapade on their website last night which looks great value for the Frame and Fork at £350. So many choices... 😕
RM.
Munrobiker, a stoater weighs less than a CdF??
the CdF frame is listed as 2.25kg, the Stoater is 2kg.
Found a deal on a Stigmata frame... any opinions on this build?
Santa Cruz Stigmata
Kinesis Crosslight wheels
Shimano Ultegra groupset
Argh... then I see the Lysnkey Cooper CX frame on CRC..

This is such a hard decision!

Top end frame.
Mid range group.
Budget wheels.
Mid range group.
Is it though?
Fair points 🙂 Gotta be compromises or, well you know ££££..
Is a bit.
More the budget wheels I'd have issue with. 200 quid wheels on a 2 grand frame seems wrong somehow. At least the wheels are easy to upgrade when you have the cash.
Id go with SRAM Force CX1, but I don't want a 1x crank for on the road, I reckon it'd spin out too much.
just being lazy with the wheels. Should do a build on JRA.
Maybe something disc from Wheelsmith?
Cool, thanks for that.
I'm currently having the same dilemma / debate.
I fancy getting a cross bike although I don't really need one. Definitely an N+1 purchase.
I rather like the look of this -
http://whyte.bike/gb/models/all-terrain/cx-cyclocross/saxon-cross-team/
Like the look of that Saxon Cross. Seems quite weighty though. Wondering where the heft is.

"I'd go with a circle, but I only like squares" 🙂
ooh, ya cheeky bogger... there's more to the groupset than the crank 😛
Shimano hydraulic STI are blinking marvellous, the shifting is exceptional and braking hard from the hoods on a gravelly descent with perfect control is witchcraft if you're used to callipers on the road.
Not tried the sram so can't compare.
