Have I got this right? If I buy something from Germany that is manufactured in Germany for my bike and import it into the UK, there is no import duty, just VAT to pay (plus handling fee)?

As I'll not be paying the local 19% VAT equivalent, then it's not that different.

Admittedly, it needs to be reasonably expensive to justify the shipping and processing fee, but it shouldn't be too bad.

Correct. The German Seller doesn’t have to sell to you at 0% vat though. (Most do…)

Thanks. And there's no import duty on items made in Germany?

Yep, what Tom said.

Most handling fees are in the region of £12 for wee items to £50 for big shipments. VAT is what it is.

I can't think of an example of anything made in Germany which attract import duties (not sure on alcohol for example) but mostly it's no.

If it's less than £135 the seller should pay your vat and you catch no extra fees. Over £135 expect VAT up to £20 in fees. Duty will be waived assuming the seller fills the paperwork in correctly, but don't assume they will. However it will only be 4% most likely if not.
