Just read the article about solo riding in the latest mag (135), very interesting as like a lot of folk I have done many hours alone on the bike in the last year due to Covid restrictions. There are some great pics with the various riders stories, but who takes them? Do all the riders have remote control cameras that they set up and take pics as they ride away, then ride back to pick up the gear? Or is it like many TV programmes where the intrepid explorer does a piece to camera about being alone in the wilderness with only bears for company when we all know there is a 5 man/woman production crew behind the camera. OK the riders featured won't have a production crew with them (probably?), but do they have a mate with them who is useful with a camera? Or are these just stock pics to illustrate a lone cyclist?

I've done a bit for the mag, solo riding with camera on a timer. It was a bit trial-and-error. I suspect that grabbing a still from a video is easier.

Custom timer on camera or a GoPro taking a pic every 0.5 seconds then some post production is how I do my solo stuff plus a lot of riding the same section over and over to ensure a reasonable shot.

Haven't attempted it, but I imagine camera on tripod with wireless remote taped to the bar might work. Just hit it at the opportune moment as you ride past the canera. I've got the wireless remote for my DSLR, can't remember if it works with my EOS M or not but would be useful if it did.

No aware of the specific photos but I know plenty just set the video going and take the best frames from it. There's a few videos on youtube of how some do it with iphones etc.

or a GoPro taking a pic every 0.5 seconds

Thanks! Might have to try that, usually just go for the lazy screenshot of paused video.

I take my solo pics with either my action camera taking shots on a timer or take snapshots from vid clips, i can set it off from my phone as well. I have very small tripod that fits in a jersey back pocket that helps also it has bendy legs for hooking around tress if I am taking MTB pics and want different angles. I have asked people to take pics before most people don't mind.

I don’t know for those but I’ve got stuff in the mag with a camera, folding tripod and a remote shutter. I found the best way was in my mouth and just bite to take a picture. It works great. Pete’s recent cover was shot in with a remote timer and repeating a few times I think which is awesome.

Or you put your camera on the longest timer you’ve got, set it up, run back down to where your bike is and leap on it as quickly as you possibly can. There is no time to adjust your feet in your pedals, you just have to go! This is not a recommended method, it’s a pain in the ass.

That said, Pete Scullion’s latest cover is a selfie, done on a timer. Amazing.

Off at a tangent- just got the mag today and my quick skim through has noticed Barney’s ejaculated (at least) twice in articles. Good to see the puerile smut from here carries over.

@FB-ATB, have a read of Conan-Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories, Holmes and Watson are ejaculating all the time.

On the "selfie" pics, when I'm riding with mates we have enough trouble getting a decent in focus shot when someone is holding the camera/phone, god knows how we would get a good selfie riding off into the sunset. No wonder some of these solo rides are "epic", must add hours to a ride trying to get the right photos, for every pic we see in the magazine there must dozens (hundreds?) that don't come up to the required standard. Or these riders are so skilful (and lucky!) that they get it right most of the time.

That’s a selfie?! That’s amazing! I might have to have a go at that, not sure that a fat bloke pottering about the byways of Kirklees will have quite the same dramatic impact though 😀
