In the midst of reviewing all our insurance policies so keen to get the views from the hive.

Historically we usually just add the bikes (5) to our house ‘contents’ policy but thought it prudent to see what else is out there and are there better or more sensible options. We’ve not had any prices back yet but the hassle of specifying every last bit of detail on the bikes is a bit wearisome especially as the ‘bot’ on the other end of the phone isn’t really clued up.

5 bikes need covered ranging from a replacement value of £1k - £5+k in value inc a SWB Jeff Jones and SC HightowerCC. A rough calc would suggest a total replacement value is circa £12k.

What are you lot doing and where would you recommend for specific ‘bike’ only cover as opposed to lumping in with your house contents insurance?

Thanks

Have you checked out your member discount with Yellow jersey?

Last time I looked into it all back in July it was still cheaper to just add all my bikes onto my home insurance with Nationwide as Listed Items. For £9k of bikes (new for old) in a flat I'm paying £285 for the year whereas specific insurance were coming back as £200 just for one bike with specified locks etc!

Blimey, Yellow Jersey are expensive!

Just ran a quote as my home insurance is due, Yellow Jersey are about 3x the price of Pedal Cover but with poorer cover.

Honestly feel like Laka is the best option. No crazy clauses and your insurance cost goes up or down (with a set max or min) depending on how many in the group claim. I have 4 bikes on mine ranging it similar value to the OP and its about £45 a month on average.  https://laka.co/gb/

adding them on to your home insurance is normally cheaper. i'm cover £12K of bikes as specified items on my buildings & contents with e-sure and the polciy is c £270 annually. iirc the cover for the bike as specified contents costs c £85 of that annual premium

Home insurance here, with bikes added as named items. I bounce from introductory offer to introductory offer as long as the cover is sufficient and includes away from home. Its been Lloyds for a couple of years and is Swinton at the moment after renewing last month.

+1 for Pedalcover home+bike insurance. Policy not as good as a few years ago but still the best I can find

I'm just waiting on my new bike, thinking i may use Laka for a few months until my home insurance is due for renewal then switch over.
Anyone on Laka have a referral code for the £25 each thing?

Just added 2 bikes (£1.8k and £5.1k) to my NFU house insurance at £15 extra a month, which was much less than any of the dedicated bike insurance people I tried. No small print on specific locks or where they must be kept.

With any more than a couple of decent bikes specific bike insurance premiums are insane.

Nationwide house & contents here, really good cover including away from the home.

Been a bit disappointed with our Yellow Jersey cover - travel insurance rather than house.
It has 'cancellation' cover on our annual travel insurance - taken out pre-covid to cover USA roadtrip trip all booked pre-covid. Turns out the small-print for the cancellation cover only covers very specific conditions (if you die from pregnancy, get redundant, are armed forces or if your home is damaged). It doesn't cover cancellation due to F/O advising not to travel to your destination or flights not being available, etc.

I will definitely pay more attention to small print in future.

As mentioned - pedalcover.
Both mine and partners bikes covered, including accident cover - bikes total £7kish
75k contents (seemed standard preset and more than we needed!)
Covered from a car/van also
For circa £280/yr

Direct Line select is a premium version of direct line that offer un-named valuable cover up to £10k per valuable inc bikes.
Wasn't a massive amount and helpful if you've got a few bikes and don't remember to change them on insurance

How does different bike insurance work? (Never had it)

I've got lots of bikes and stuff gets swapped over, replaced etc.
I'd be hard pressed to say what each one is worth or replacement values as most have been built over time with heavily discounted or used parts.

with laka, you upload pics and details and your calculated value, you'll only be covered up to that amount but the idea being you can replace like for like

As in new or NOS? e.g. I've got a 2016 Factory 36 is that current RRP of a factory 36 ? (etc.)
Say 1 bike was stolen with my "best wheels" but those wheels were in the picture/value with a different bike?

Currently with Esure, about £30 to add the latest £2.5k bike and most of that was admin fee.

Prior to that we were with Aviva, who were excellent when I crashed my Condor road bike and wrote off the frame

I use esure for added bike insurance on a household policy.theres also insurance for a number of bikes uptown a certain limit without extra charge or special locks or being locked up at all in case you have cheaper additional bikes.these are just included on a std household policy.also a great company to deal with who don't RIP you off at renewal stage.well they tried to increase the premium a bit and then after one phone call I got it back to a cheaper price although the rise wasn't that much.

I'll second Laka. I have my bikes insured along with GPS units etc.... I recently made a claim as one of my bike computers had gone through the wash. Within two hours of making the claim they had ordered a replacement for me.

One of the reasons they appealed to me was that they cover you if you're bike is stolen from within your car. I used to do this regularly in the before times when I worked in an office.
