[Closed] Who Instagrams their cycling? Camera or phone?

For sh*** and giggles (as the Aussies say), I fancy being a tart and posting some cycling photos to Instagram, which leads to the inevitable STW opportunity to recommend what you use...

Sadly will mostly be road riding.

Should I use my phone, or get a pocket camera - and if the latter, what do you use/recommend?

Anyone brave enough to share their Insta here?

The problem with the camera is getting the post onto Instagram.

It can of course be done but it might influence you decision. I copy all camera photos onto my PC. I then edit and upload to Flickr. I share from Flickr to Instagram on my phone. There is no endorsed way of sharing a photo direct from PC to a Instagram

A camera that can send pictures to your phone via wifi or blue tooth might work

I do along with facebook and youtube ( https://www.youtube.com/c/mtbscotland ) .  just use my phone (iphone 5se) and capture video from the gopro to upload.  don't bother with editing   You can upload to IG from the computer but it is a bit convoluted and you can't do video.

People I know who use proper camera's for Instagram use a camera with WiFi or Bluetooth to connect to phone and upload from there. I'd just use a phone though providing you have a modern smartphone, they're never viewed at very high resolution, though zoom would be nice I suppose.

Plenty of plugins for photo products though, lightroom has one

It's 90% mobile for me unless I've had a day on the big camera in which case it's more of a 5 shot showcase

(also not many bikes in the feed as I've been doing that whole moving continent thing)

I recently had my Camera stolen. I didn't see the point of replacing it. I just use my phone (iPhone 6S), as its plenty good enough quality for snapping while I'm out. I've got loads of riding pics on my Instagram

Remember as well that its linked to Strava, so if you post them while you're out riding its like a bit of an illustration to your Strava route too

I use Later.com, find it easier typing out tags and descriptions on a big screen, plus I can schedule a heap at a time, it then transfers to an app on your phone which pops up an alert

I use instagram a lot and usually post photos from my camera, it is a Sony RX100. The best way i've found is to have a wifi SD card or wifi function on your camera to transfer to your phone.

I do like to edit photos in Lightroom and then usually end up using those to upload which I do via an app called Flume which unfortunately seems to be only available for Mac, you have to pay for it but I managed to sneak a free download when they had some promotion on.

Here's my instagram if you fancy a look 🙂 - _any_excuse_to_ride

Always use a phone personally, but not a Nexus 5x or the lens will break - repeatedly.

I use my phone most of the time, but sometimes use pics from my Olympus omd. I download then onto the laptop, email them to myself, then open them with my phone.

There is a free plug in for uploading you can get from the adobe store tbing, doesnt do tags though

I have a policy. I only post bangers. No pics of my own stupid face, no plates of food, no day to day mundanity etc...

But, I've still got hardly any followers. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Do I need to look good in a bikini?

I use Dropbox for file storage and the Dropbox app is on my phone. So whatever I shoot, proper camera or phone, ends up in Dropbox and I can export from there. It could not be easier.

I didn't know about later.com, I like the idea of scheduling posts. I'll be trying that out.

I'm here by the way...  https://www.instagram.com/tgh_photo/

I've got a mate who Instagram's gopro videos of road biking. And I thought MTB gopro was boring, this is a whole new level... It's like watching the dashcam of a moped

I'm fairly sure the vast majority of instagram users will be viewing in the app on a phone or tablet so I've found phone photos come out pretty well on it. If you're using lightroom and a camera bear in mind instagram has pretty weird photo sizes, google them unless you are just doing the square one.

Phone photos come out pretty well if you nuke them with snapseed enough 😉

Nice to see Hardangerfjord, I spent a lot of time working on a project routing an HVDC interconnector to Norway from Scotland and that was one of the landing options. Utterly amazing landforms, the seabed plunges down as you come inshore from the comparatively very shallow north sea, nightmare for cable laying though!

You're contemplating buying a camera just to Instagram your road rides?

Not sure what you're aiming to get out of it, but I'd use whatever you've got now and see if anyone likes the results before throwing cash at your social media presence.

Or if you just want to buy a camera, buy one.

Sometimes, but rarely I'll use a camera for Instagram. Normally just use my phone though.

Mostly biking photos, but some general outdoors and random ones. Some #nofilter, some #filteredto****

Most of what I post is taken on my phone or from race photographers. I sometimes post stuff taken on GoPro, which is pretty easy using the gopro app to get it straight to a phone.

If you use any photo storage apps as an intermediate, watch that it doesn't massively downgrade the quality. For good quality pics I make sure Google photos is uploading in original size rather than smaller.

I just use a cheap Chinese phone I can replace easy if I drop it in a river or sit on it. It's not got a brilliant camera but snapseed helps make the photos look ok. Or I take a still from my cheap Chinese gopro-a-like, which also works well.

Hmmmm...

Won't let me embed, in fact it won't even let me post a link, link/onscreen keyboard just bounce about when I select link. Android on chrome.

you don’t have to insert it as a link. Just Paste the link straight into the post and it gets picked up automagically.

Until recently I didn't bother playing with the enhancements in IG, just used the odd filter.I think it can make a nice improvement if used judiciously though.

No messin' image...

Fiddled about with this one a bit...

Sometimes it can go a bit wrong though...

I post from the phone. camera to phone to instagram seems a little at odds with the "insta" bit.

I hardly ever use the filters, a bit of levels tweaking in the edit bit, to bring out detail in dark spots etc. maybe bam the saturation up a bit, but always to make it look like how it was when I saw it, rather than like something else. If it looks unnatural, then it goes back a step.

on the embeddin front, you can also right click on an image on the desktop, "view page source" and line 72 has the image file url

Used to use a GoPro on time lapse then choose one picture for each ride (hence the username). Got some shots that I like that way:

However, transferring from gopro to phone is more faff than I want so I tend just to use my phone instead.

I usually remember to add a few pictures to strava, but forget to put anything on instagram. Don't really use social media much!. I've gone through and followed a few people from the thread though. Just use my old knackered iphone.

I'm like most I edit on my phone, if its going to Insta it doesn't matter too much about the quality.

Learned not to use the Moviemaker filters on a recent one as when insta degrades the quality it ruins the vid.

I love Instagram, its got its downsides (the relentless sponsored accounts promoting all sorts of tat) but in terms of cycling its a really good way of seeing whats going on out there.

https://www.instagram.com/andrewwoodall/

https://www.instagram.com/p/Ba2DKt7APQG/

https://www.instagram.com/p/Beyeb5xnBEx/

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bc76MncgUHP/

As for mine, its mostly bikes, bit of fitness stuff and the outdoors (walks, rides to work etc), my cat, more bike stuff, cars very occasionally and yes, some pictures of food. Bit like an online diary, sometimes pretty mundane and not as epic as some. However I follow some people posted here and I got to say the quality of photo and comment in the bike world is pretty damn interesting.
