You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Scandal - should have one on my multi - if I remember I'll have a look before riding down.......
Unfortunately I'm busy tonight so won't be out 🙁
Have a good ride, see you after Christmas and New Year,(unless anyone is out in-between)
Scandal - I will have a t25 with me in case danny doesn't have one.
Sounds like it could be building up for a bit of a wet n windy one, all adds to the fun!
Cheers both.
Looks like my light has not arrived so I will be riding with a very makeshift helmet set-up that I am hoping lasts the distance (probably wont)
Also still have blocked sinus issues so apologies in advance for plodding along at the back holding you up.
Wind is building as we speak 😀
Don't think i will be-able to make it tonight as im a bit busy. Its given out gales and heavy rain anyway. And don't think its an excuse because its my round for the drinks. Lol.
Guess we wont be going next wednesday. Don't think the wife's would let us go somehow. We will probebly be to bloated and pissed by 7pm anyway.
Just putting this out there now in case you see it.
Not 100% for tonight 😥
If I'm not there by 5 past go without. Feeling shitter as the day has gone on, I've had the same cold for about 2 bloody weeks and started to feel worse today.
So pissed off, although you pair will be able to ride freely without me (not biked in 3 weeks)
Well, Bob and I had an interesting bike ride this evening. No mechanicals, thankfully, but Bob's bar light did go into 'disco' mode about halfway around. He still did a bloody good job of riding using only a helmet light, though. And on a rigid singlespeed!
To say the weather was 'challenging' wouldn't really do it justice. At one point, at the top of and coming down from a well-known local hill, I would say the weather became 'extreme'. I can remember only one occasion on which rain hitting my face and eyes has hurt more. I would say the gusts were probably 50mph ish, and with driving rain, it certainly built a little extra character. Anyhow, still two good hours of riding, and we didn't see a single soul other than in cars. So the Wednesday evening ride was kept going. Over to the rest of you for next Wednesday...........
We didn't bother with the pub, it would have been embarrassing.
Scandal, if you are feeling a bit iffy, it was a good one to miss!
Keep your eyes peeled for stuff on here about the next ride. Let's start the new year as we mean to go on.
Fair play to you both! You would have def earned your ale tonight.
I hope to get a bit of biking mojo back in 2014 and should be able to make a few more rides.
Will be in south Wales next Weds (is there something happening that day?) but may be up for a NYD ride - maybe even during the day?? Like you say, start us we mean to go on!
😯
Looked outside about 7.30 ish and felt for you pair.
Well done for completing the ride in that weather.
I felt shit and seeing the weather building forced my hand, im starting to think its a chest infection or something as its hanging around for weeks.
Hoping to clear up in the coming days and get out on Sunday, possibly for a sunrise ride over your way.
Good stuff chaps
I wouldn't normally consider myself a fair weather rider but I think last night would've been too much even without the never-ending cold and dodgy knee. Well done for getting out there!
Oh wait, you didn't go to the pub after? Disqualified for failing to complete the course, I'm afraid. 😉
Oh wait, you didn't go to the pub after? Disqualified for failing to complete the course, I'm afraid.
(Hangs head in shame).
You are quite right - this was a 'fail'.
On the other side of the argument, though - you could argue that we saved the Curzon as a post-ride pint destination as going in there in the state we were in could have led to a ban.
Every single item of clothing I was wearing could be wrung out.
Just on the very slim chance - any takers for the Peaks tomorrow? Will be a bit draughty and a bit cold, but I think the forecast is still holding for a (relatively) OK day..................
You two are proper double hard. Will have to sort something out xmas week.
Danny,
Im guessing you had an absolute cracker in the peaks today matey, fantastic weather and no weekend crowds.
You are indeed correct. The peaks today were lovely. Virtually no one about. I saw a handful of walkers and only two other 'friendlies' all day.
I was definitely 'breaking trail' for the first few miles as I was cracking through the ice on the puddles.
The first part of potato alley was interesting just after midday. Started off at a reasonable, but conservative pace only to arrive on the first steepish bit to find ICE! Didn't clock it until I was already committed, but it wasn't a complete icy sheet, so got away with it. It hadn't occurred to me that this was the only descent that is north-facing and in the open.
Lockerbrook was also interesting in one spot as the mud and leaves have disguised all the gaps and rocks in one spot, again too late I adopted a 'point and hope' approach. Again, got away with it.
All in all a nice day out, the lack of other people meant I didn't absolutely gun it downhill, just in case, but the general scenery, weather etc more than made up for it. I got back to the car just as the wind and rain really picked up, so got lucky there too.
I can confirm, however, that 1x10 is not currently flattering me on the steeper climbs 😳
Still, I made it up some steep bits with a combination of determination and brute force.
Not really around much in the next week or so, so just wanted say 'Nadolig Llawen'* to all the NWLRC members - hope you have a good one and let's try and all get back on track next year with all this Xmas sh*t outta the way! 😉
* Merry Christmas of course!
Yep, I'll second that from rascal.
We can take a rain check on tomorrow night's ride if you like. I'm thinking of trying to escape on Friday evening, though - if anyone is interested!?
Anyhow, until the next NWLRC rendezvous, Merry Christmas!
Merry xmas to all nwlrc. Ill be up for friday evening.
Happy Christmas all, and blwyddyn newydd dda to rascal (been drinking with my welsh-ish dad tonight!)
Have a good one, hope to be back out riding soon.
Merry Christmas to all nwlrc members and family.
Drink and be merry
Tomorrow (Friday 27th) night at 7pm in the Woodhouse Eaves village car park for those who want to work off half a Christmas dinner or so!
Stick a reply on here if you are coming, if not I'll head out alone..........
I will be there all being well
I might drag myself out for a ride, hopefully see you there!
Also, where is the car park? I normally ride out from home so wouldn't be sure of the meeting point.
The car park is next to the village hall on Main Street. I don't know which direction you are coming from, but if you come from Quorn, turn left at the bulls head - that is Main Street. The car park is a couple of hundred yards down in your left.
Cool, see you there!
Have a (nother) family engagement tomorrow night 🙁
Have a great ride chaps
Jez and Schmiken.
I'm really sorry fellas, but I'm going to bail on tonight. I know it's a shit thing to do (and to leave it this late in the day), but I'm coming down with acute man flu as we speak.
I am at work, and I have been trying to convince myself all day that it is just a sniffle and it will pass etc - but i've now got the sweats and feel pretty crap. I think a blanket on the sofa is more appropriate compared to a couple of hours sweating and shivering around in the wind.
If possible, can you please reply to this to let me know you got the message - if not, I'll drive down to the car park at 7pm to make sure you're not standing around unnecessarily.
Sorry again.
Thats ok. Sort something out for next week. Hopefully you will be better then. Got loads of new bits for my bike so give me a chance to get them all fitted.
Phew - that's one down, one to go - feeling really shite - don't really want to leave the house again once I get home!
Flop down on sofa and let the kids beat the crap out of me is about all I can envisage doing!
Not been on my bike for 15 days now. Might venture up peak district on sunday. What was the route you did when u went last?
Thanks for coming out and letting me know chap!
It was the least I could do after 'advertising' a ride, then bailing on it myself!
We ride pretty regularly on Wednesday evenings, and have only missed one or two since August, so the offer is always there!
Hope you had a good one anyway, wish I could have managed it, but am currently not feeling very chipper.
Sorry to hear it Danny
I have been struggling with It for 3 weeks solid now, im getting a bit fed up to be honest.
Cheers scandal. There's going to be some manning up in a day or so from me.
Jez. I basically did the following route (I hope you know the names).
Started at Ladybower Inn. Climbed up through the nature reserve to Whinstone Lee Tor. Descended Derwent Edge (ending on the flags). Rode round the reservoir to Fairholmes visitor centre. Took road back along other side of reservoir to Bridge End car park. Climb steep bridleway. Right at top. Along to Hagg Farm switchbacks. Descend these. Cross A57 and carry on to bottom. Along for a bit to foot of the beast. Pushed up beast as concessional track is now closed I am told. Right at hope cross, descend potato alley. Cross A57. Up through Rowlee Farm to junction at top of Hagg Farm. Turn left and ride to Lockerbrook. Descend screaming mile. Right on road back to Fairholmes. Ride round to bottom of flags. Revers the first climb and descent.
That should keep you busy for 4-5 hours. I like it as a solo winter route as there are loads of ways to bail if something goes wrong. The Kinder circuit (for example) is slightly risky as a solo when the days are short as it doesn't really have any bailouts if you have a mechanical or a stack.
Anyone out riding tomorrow (Mon)?
Might be up for a local pootle PM with a few mates (Non NWLRC) over Swithland way if anyone fancies it...cheers
Happy new year to all nwlrc.
What Jez said.
Saying it now as I shall be in no fit state come 12pm 😉
...or even 12am 🙄
Yes, happy new year to all the NWLRC. Let's make 2014 our best riding year ever(!)
Man flu peaked Sunday and yesterday, but had to go to cousins wedding yesterday. I didn't know I was such a good actor.
There's an outside chance I might get a sneaky evening outing in tomorrow, but it's by no means a cert, so I won't 'advertise' it like last Friday 😳
Joking aside, all the best for the new year.
What days do you all go an anyone from swadlincote way, never been that way done the local bits round here robins an the other bits would like to find more close
Anyone up for an early(ish) morning ride on Sunday(5th)?
I was going to do my 'long' weekend route starting from mine at about 8-30am if anyone is keen.
I basically start in Woodhouse Eaves, work my way over to Gracedieu via a few interesting tracks and then back again via a few other interesting tracks. Optional add-ons are always possible.
Should clock in at a little over 22 miles with a probable 60:40 split in favour of off-road.
It's a good winter route - doable in 3 hours in summer (by me) - a bit longer in the slop.
Let me know ASAP - if you are up for it I'll arrange a meeting point and time.
Cheers.
Usually every Wednesday Ruffride, keep your eyes peeled for updates on here roughly Monday / Tuesday.
I won't be making next week as I'm off to Centre Parcs for the week 8)
May well be up for that Danny, will be a decision made on Saturday however so I'll be sure to let you know.
Possibly going for a blip round Cannock tomorrow, depending how I'm feeling after a 30th tonight.
Definitely up for that. Can only do weekends now anyway as working away in Dorchester for 6 weeks from Monday. Kinda sucks ass really.
Ok.
Everyone who is up for a nice mud fest tomorrow morning meet at Curzon Arms car park at 8-30am.
Ride should be in the region of three and a half hours if we go at social pace.
See you there(?)
Sounds good Danny,
will drive over and possible bail when we reach my neck of the woods depending on how my 'man flu' aching legs are feeling.
Happy New Year NWLRC!
Like the idea but in-laws will be here in the next hour...would be bad form to bugger off at 8am tomorrow so can't make it. Enjoy...it will very sloppy out there!
Hope u both walked back ok haha. The valve had no thread in the middle which was a bit strange. Fobbing me off with dodgy innertubes. Closer look at the tyre and 2" slit on the sidewall. Only done 20 miles on it so back to the shop it goes. Hope to c u all soon for a another weekend ride.
Yes, got back ok. I (for one) was in 'survival' mode by that point. After three to four weeks of boozing I found today extremely tough! I would say that I was more knackered today than if I'd been in the Peaks, mainly due to the slogging through the cack.
Roll on some hard frosts.
Dodgy inner tubes, cheek! I'm pretty certain that one had a continuous thread, so I reckon the thread might be added to the valve, rather than being machined 'out'. Anyway, it goes quite near the top of my 'random mechanicals' list.
Looking on the bright side, if you did put a two inch gash in you tyre when going over the bars, then whatever did it could have done similar to your skin! Sometimes it doesn't bear thinking about what could have happened.
Scandal, hope you got your roast dinner. I am broken now.
Might surprise you Danny but I quite enjoyed the ride 🙂
just had dinner, oh and the obligatory red wine, back to square one.
shame about the strange valve issue jet, you missed an absolute slog.
Still, fantastic to get back in the saddle after a prolonged absence, although 21 miles and 2300ft of climbing in that slop was a stretch in the end.
not available this week but hopefully kick things off next week.
2300 feet?
Is that really right?
If it is, it just goes to show that it is more hilly around here than you think!
I also enjoyed the ride, I was just struggling a bit too much for it to be completely fun!
Still, it needed to be done, if I hadn't forced myself out and endured a bit of pain, then it would have just been delaying the inevitable.
I may make Wednesday night, but I might not as work will be crazy for the next couple of weeks. If I can, I will be there.
Yep, according to Strava which I find to usually be very accurate on my other rides.
There are not many instances where you are riding flat between Woodhouse and Whitwick way.
Anyone planning on being out tomorrow?
It will be muddy... but it looks like the wind will have buggered off.
Not tomorrow unfortunately, got plans.
Oh, and happy new year everyone!
Very doubtful TBH...I need to get some miles in so I'm not dragging everyone else back.
Just out of interest where is the ride tomorrow?
I'll be out biking locally somewhere Sun, and doing a Cannock trip on Sun 26th if anyone fancies either.
Have fun boys.
I really want to be out tomorrow night, but I can't commit to it as work is not very pleasant at the moment.
Can anyone 'lead' a ride in one of our two locations if I can't make it?
I know that scandal and Jez can't make it, and I see rascal is out too, so does anyone feel confident enough (in local knowledge terms) around here to do it?
If the meet is 7pm on the Woodhouse eaves village car park that will maximise my chances of making it, but then that's just me being selfish!
I would say I was genuinely 50-50 to make it.
Sorry to be non-committal, but I don't want to leave a load of people standing in a car park!
Can't make it tonight. At home, but having to dial in to work to do some more. 🙁
Let's see if we can get something happening next week?
Any one from this way out today I'm swadlincote way
Just thought I'd look to see who's about tomorrow night.
No-one by the looks of it!
Anyway - I'm declaring myself out yet again...not because of work - because I was out Sunday afternoon and cleaning bike and all my gear was a pain early evening...never mind doing it when I get back all shat up and not around this weekend to do it either - yes, I'm a pussy 😆
Could be worse. You could be working away in Dorchester like me.
I am planning to be out tomorrow, anyone else?
Hi Bob.
I'd like to be out, but I am still in the frigging crazy fortnight at work. Are you alright to ride solo from Woodhouse eaves if I can't make it?
If you are ok with my uncertainty, then I reckon Woodhouse eaves car park at 7pm is the go, I just can't guarantee I'll be there (again).
Stick a reply on here and we can take it from there. 😐
Evening chaps
I am hoping to be out tomorrow but I won't be able to say for sure until tomorrow.
Hi all
I'm still a definite no unfortunately, and will be for a few more weeks yet. The knee problem still hasn't gone away but have finally been to see the knee doctor who has given me a series of activities to perform twice a day... plus strict instructions not to ride for another 6 weeks. 🙁
So hopefully early March, by which time it'll be almost 3 months since I've had a proper ride so I reckon I'll have some catching up to do!
Hope you manage to keep the rides going in the meantime, I'll be back out there as soon as I can!
OK, I will be at Woodhouse Eaves Car Park at 7pm.
Hope you can make it out Danny and Scandal.
Anyone else?
Hi chaps
work was no issue, however we have had a family bereavement so I shall be going round to see the rents tonight.
Sorry Bob, hope you still get out and enjoy.
I will be riding this weekend if anyone is keen?
I ain't gonna make it tonight. Work is shit. No other word for it. Sorry for this - please feel free to take it up with the powers that be here if you like.......... 😈
Scandal - I'll stick a post on here later about the weekend. I will check at home when I can get out and let yo know......
Got to ride at the weekend if I'm missing tonight.
As it looks like it would be just me, myself and I, think I will head home and have a quick spin round my not so much fun but straight out the door stuff.
Hope you all get some riding in at the weekend and we will try and sort something for next week.
I will be up for the weekend that's if my bike doesn't brake after the first 300 yards.
Yes, sorry about all this. I got home at 7.10 (so too late for meet). Also have a bit of a headache after yet another day of:
AN Other: I just need a 'quick' report doing.
Me: What's the deadline (bearing in mind it is our year end reporting period and our auditors are in and crawling all over us, so I am already up to my eyeballs and staying late every evening)?
AN Other: End of the day.
Me: You do realise it is 4-45pm, don't you?
It is starting to get on my tits.
I will be riding locally on Saturday morning if anyone is interested, I'll probably want to be setting out from home to maximise riding time as I have a sort of deadline - hope that is alright.
I'll be out tomorrow morning from mine at about 8-30am.
If anyone is interested we can make it an 'official' meet, if not, I'll ride solo.
Cheers.
Would love to come but come down with a bad case of elephant flu (a common cold). At home next week so should make Wednesday night.
Can't do tomorrow either. Will possibly ride over this way for an hour if I get time in the morning.
hoping for a bigger ride on Sunday.
Have a good one Danny
Cheers scandal. I did have a good un this morning although I got some sort of random pinch flat and also managed to snap a rear spoke at gracedieu. Zip tied the broken one to another one and rode home with no ill effects, but it would have to be the drive side of the rear wouldn't it? Thinking of it, I've never broken a spoke that wasn't drive side rear. Sod's law innit.
That path next to the res at the bottom of the field is now a pond. You can't put your feet anywhere that isn't under water, but it is (just) rideable. It was very wet, but the main track to the top of Bardon is eroding fast, it will be a worthy little descent soon so long as no bright spark resurfaces it. Those fence post don't want to shift, though!
These mechanicals seem to be following you around mate.
I went for a ride over this way on Sunday, it was an utter mud bath for the most part and a very difficult 15 miles.
Are we riding this week?
Yes we are riding this week. Or at least I am(!)
Can I set the meet as 7-00pm village car park Woodhouse Eaves?
We can take it from there. I'm really hoping these frosts will just try a little bit harder so that the ground hardens up a bit. I'm still waiting for the first 'clear and frosty' night ride of the winter season - or even snowy night ride.
That's 7pm on wednesday for anyone who reads this on the off-chance.
I should be there.
A clear and frosty evening would be fantastic.
Count me in.
I'm not going to make it this week.
It seems its my turn to have knee problems with an old injury playing up. Probably be off the bike for a couple of weeks and maybe need an op. but should find out more next week.
Have a good one tomorrow and fingers crossed for some colder weather soon.
Seems to be clearing up nicely now, don't think we will be enjoying a frosty (grippy) ride though.
Might be about time for a rear guard 😀
