I did wonder who was on the fat bike having seen various tracks in Swithland last week!
Remember kids...

@ everyone - we alternate weekly meets at 7pm on a Wednesday. The next one (2nd April) is at the Man Within Compass pub car park in Whitwick.
@BillOddie - all in compliance unless you count lights as making presence easily detected and squealing brakes (it was very moist last night)(!)
Hope to see a few there next week...............
That sounds good danny, doesn't look to be too far from me.
Sorry about the no show chaps, tried texting you Danny but must have the wrong number.
BillOddie - I particularly liked the final point in that link 🙂
It's been a while since I posted here, and even longer since I made a Wednesday night ride. Anyway, hi to those that remember me. And, well, hi to those that don't - Good to see a few new names here!
Looks like it'll be a while longer before I can make it out. After giving my dodgy knee the prescribed amount of rest, hot water bottle and ice treatment I finally got out for a ride a couple of weeks ago and could barely pedal after about 5 gentle miles. I've been referred to a knee specialist and had an MRI scan this week. Results are due the week after next. Much as I'm hoping for a miracle cure, realistically it will be a while longer.
I'll definitely be back out when I can though, good to see you're keeping it going - especially enjoyed Danny's write-up of the peaks adventure!
I just hope I can get back to riding before I need lights... (Still have a spare rear light in the car though Scandal, just in case!)
Like a numpty I've only gone and forgotten that we have a family funeral (my wife's grandma) on Wednesday. Doh.
So obviously I won't be joining you this Wednesday. Can someone who knows the Whitwick stuff make sure they are there, please?
After a very pleasing little rattle around Swithy and others yesterday I decided to bite the bullet and fit a top guide. So I now have chain device, narrow wide ring and clutch mech. If the chain comes off again I'm getting an e bike.
On the (very) plus side, I discovered a couple of hundred yards of absolutely lovely trail yesterday about 500 yards from my house! I've ridden around here for eight years and never found it before! A nice steep and rooty start, a quick cross of a grassy clearing, through a gap in a stone wall and onto a steep and loamy bit of trails with a couple of really nice sweeping corners. Needless to say it will feature in the next ride around here.
Hope it goes as well as it can do Danny.
Who is riding tomorrow, I must admit I am not a definite at the moment, Im afraid man flu has been doing the rounds in our office and I am feeling very chesty this evening. I will have to see how things pan out tomorrow.
Muddy, it's good to see you back on here, get that knee sorted for the summer mate.
Yeah, hope it goes ok, my wife is in two minds about doing a reading (which might be a bit of an emotional moment), but I guess I can step in if needed.
I 'test rode' my new trail discovery this evening and I liked it very much. I also did a supremely naughty bit as well, which will feature, but is not wise whilst we are lit up like the runway at east mids.
It would be good if some of you could make it out to 'keep the ride alive' (registered trademark), but if not, no worries.
I will return next week and if we get away on time in the light I will show you all the more 'exclusive' riding near me!
See you then.
Lights fully charged, I have been getting a good 2 hours on full so no riding through the woods without lights this time(hopefully). I'm in for tomorrow night, who else is up for it?
I'll be there. Lights charged. Dropper post installed. C u then.
I will be out tonight, hopefully it will be warmer and drier this week.
I should be there. Not sure if I'll have any legs though, accidentally did a decently paced 80km yesterday!
Sorry for the late notice but i am not going to make it out now, hopefully see you next week.
Good ride tonight again. Just me, asbrooks and everyone. Started with a blast round Cademan woods in the thick mud, went round Whitwick quarry, over the naughty route that can't be named, round Bardon hill, back through Whitwick woods to the pub for a smooth pint of ale.
Everyone(Nathan)took us on some new trails round Cademan woods that were interesting. Also found a new route leading to the area that can't be named.
Did about 14 miles in all.
Hope the funeral went ok Dan.
Away for 6 weeks now in London so probably be a no show till mid May. Let's try and do something over easter
Another great ride last night! I have a sore knee after coming off in Cademan woods but all's good. Lights lasted well now I've got the charger sorted out.
Thanks for the guiding duties Jez. Hope work goes OK in the big smoke!
Easter sounds good if Easter Monday. Got the inlaws coming over from France, it'll be a bit rude to clear off whilst they are here.
OMFG! Are you guys still alive? I mean, riding through the killer smog. And what's worse, it's FOREIGN smog. Farage will have something to say about this!
Looking forward to next Wednesday evening. See you then.
Was wondering why I was getting out of breath quick, the syberian dust or might just be the fact I'm recovering from man flu!
Oh nightmare.
I am going to have to pull out of Wednesday as I seem to have come down with something a bit nasty. Whatever the hell it is, my arms and legs feel like they have the worst tendonitis possible, and have done since Friday night.
Has anyone else's man flu been like this? No cough or cold or runny nose, just a bit of a sore throat and massively painful arms and legs?
Anyhow, I've been given a load of antibiotics, so hopefully I might be on the upswing by next Wednesday. 😥
Hello chaps. Sorry to put a downer on things but my mum passed away last Weds and I'm flitting between home and South Wales sorting stuff out all in a bit of a daze at the mo, so I'll be out for at least another few rides I'm afraid. Looking forward to it though - my bike hasn't seen daylight of ages 🙁
I can't really blame the smog on my unfitness, seeing as I was riding in the same conditions as everyone else 🙂 !
Is anyone going to be out tomorrow, it seems like we're all dropping like flies!
I'd quite like to, assuming it's from Woodhouse Eaves. And assuming you don't mind some random stranger holding you up with his ridiculous clown-bike
I should be out tomorrow... assume its woodhouse eaves? But if danny is not out I am not that sure of where to go!
Any chance we could make it a half 6 start now?
@theglover. It is woodhouse this week. I'm not 100% sure either, but we could make it up as we go!
A 6.30 start is OK with me. How about you mrbelowski?
Might be able to make 6:30, depends on how close the missus is to chucking the kids out of the window. Will post later.
As for route, I was hoping you fellas could show me some new awesome cheeky stuff 🙂
Cheeky stuff? I've not been paying too much attention to where I was going, just concentrating on keeping up with the group! Also I don't know how I feel about Bradgate park in the light.
The lighter nights bring out the dog walkers, moaners and whingers!
True, and starting earlier won't help
You don't really want to venture into Braggy in the daylight before 8pm or after 8am as the likelyhood of earache is greatly increased.
I was thinking the same, we really need someone with us who knows the area. If we meet at 7, we could just about spend an hour in swithland woods. Is there anything else local?
Before it gets dark that is!
Sorry chaps I'm gonna have to back out of riding tonight, I forgot to pick up my kit on the way out this morning. 😳
Sorry boys, I have no brakes, which is a slight hindrance, I will be fitting new ones tomorrow though so will be about next week.
Sorry to hear the bad news Rascal, I hope things are as well as they can be at such a difficult time.
Danny, I had something similar last week but with all the signs of a cold/flu, was a bugger and I'm still spluttering a bit.
Need to get the show back on the road next week, I just hope this great weather holds out. If my chain for the SS build has arrived tonight I might have a no doubt eye opening quick blast locally tonight.
Not sure if anyone else is out but i will aim to be at Woodhouse at 6.30.
Hope to see someone, if not i'll have a little blast round on my own.
Scandal - I got a KMC 610HX single speed 3/32ths inch chain floating around in my garage that Wiggle sent me by mistake ages ago - never even been out of the box. Can bring it tonight in exchange for a beer token if I'm allowed to play out
I have a chain delivered waiting at home but thanks for the kind offer.
I only have a nearly finished rigid single speed at the moment as my main bike is in a state of rebuild. There is not way I will be able to keep up on a first ever ss ride and it is highly unlikely I'll make it over any where near in time to ride.
If I get home early and get the chain sorted quick enough I'll try, don't wait for me though.
I think Bob knows a bit of the stuff around there so you will be in capable hands.
I aim to be out too. Should get there for just after 18:30.
Anyone interested in getting out on Easter Monday? Cannock Chase maybe?
I have family commitments over the coming weeks so I'm not sure if I can get out the for next couple of Wednesday night rides.
I might be around for a ride over Easter, my jobs list and arrangements haven't been put on the fridge door yet though 😕
Did any of you guys get out on Wednesday?
I'm around over the next few weeks and keen to ride, do shout up if you're venturing out.
I'll be up for something over easter.
Me, Matt and Rob had a nice blast on Wednesday - thoroughly enjoyed it, but i think I'll bring a thinner bike next time. And a means to buy beer 🙂
I might be able to get out a bit over easter, kids permitting
Yeah was a great night for it. I will be out again on the 23rd.
Cheers
Progress.
I managed a shortened version of my usual ride this morning, and I didn't feel too bad(!)
Hopefully I will be out to play on Wednesday, but you lot will need to be patient with me I think!
Can someone please let me know the meet as I am now out of sync?
Had a cracking day riding locally yesterday, 25 miles and some cheeky new bits around Charnwood that I have never seen before. A bit of a take any track that presents itself type of day.
All done on the single speed as well, legs feeling it today mind 😛
Anyone have any issue if we do Woodhouse this week? I haven't been able to attend the ride over there for a few months now.
Shall we set the meet as 7pm Wednesday 16th April in Woodhouse Eaves village car park?
I promise I'll show you the nice new bit I've found and a 'super-cheeky' in the daylight.
Also, anyone up for an away day Saturday 26th April (I can't really get a pass over the easter weekend)? If the weather holds, it would be a great opportunity to do Cut Gate as it should be getting pretty nicely rideable up there by now.
I don't want to put a downer on Cannock on Easter Saturday, but you guys do realise how busy it will be if the sun is out, don't you?! Form an orderly queue at the start of every 300 yard section!
Bah, I'm supposed to be on the sauce on Wednesday :(. Will see if it's been cancelled 🙂
I will be there Wednesday, for once I'm not working!
Danny, I was thinking of doing Cannock on Monday morning if anyone is interested or if someone has a better idea for Monday. I can't get out otherwise.
This Wednesday could be a possibility for me now. Won't really know till Tuesday night (must remember to pick my kit on my way out this time 😳 )
I'll come out on wednesday! (Schmiken, we could ride up together?)
Yes mate, ride up to mine and we can head out from there.
Still suck in Blackheath.
Hi Gents, I'm in tonight. Where are we meeting up this week?
The meet is 7pm Woodhouse Eaves Village Car Park. I think this might be out of sequence, but it was specifically requested! Plus I can show you a nice new couple of hundred yards of trail I have found as well as around 1km of naughty stuff that we would be too conspicuous on with the lights blaring out, but we can do now with the light holding out to 8pm.
Anyway - roll call.
I'm in, Andy (hope that is your name asbrooks!) is in, see you there.
We can also discuss a potential upcoming Peaks trip on Saturday 26th April.
So much to get excited about!
I am in chaps, although I have brakes to shorten and fit when I get in otherwise I'll be riding the ss 😯 and holding everyone up.
I'm in, and so is Nathan I believe.
Scandal - ride the singlespeed - at least that way I'll stand half a chance. This time last week I couldn't hold a pen to write my forearms hurt so much(!)
My ride on Sunday was a shortened version of the one we did at Christmas time (I went back down to Blackbrook from the monastery and roaded it most of the way back from there) and I was still feeling it yesterday. I am not in great nick at the minute. Have a heart............
Yea I'm in.
I did a very similar route on the same day with a few diversions thrown in Danny. I also found some great cheeky sections and a different route of a hill near your house?
I wouldn't worry too much about your fitness Danny, I'll still be bringing up the rear (so to speak 😯 ), I feel bad about holding you guys up.
Scandal.
We can have a quick chat about it when we meet - I won't do it on here as we have been 'warned' in the past about being too open about cheeky stuff. I hope we are referring to the same hill near my house - although I'll be pissed off if you've managed to find something it has taken me 8 years to discover!
Suffice it to say, though, it will be quite a different route to the ones we usually do over my way - we will end up on the outskirts of Loughborough at one point............
I really hope someone checks this....
I have had an absolute sitter and I'm not going to be there.
I'm absolutely pissed off as was gagging to get out. Sorry guys and especially sorry if you are waiting for me.
****
Another great ride last night, what a difference it makes when it's dry!
Danny, thanks for Guiding us around last night and I hope you're feeling better this morning mate!
Have a good weekend one and all!
Tell me you didn't wait long?
I was fuming last night, shortened first brake hose, perfect, shortened 2nd hose (rushing) total disaster, looked at the clock and let out a few expletives.
Bleed kit ordered 😳
No worries Scandal - it was 'called' at about 7-05pm, just late enough to allow schmiken and Nathan to come sprinting up the road to join the group.
Man alive - I was really enjoying last night's ride until the bloody migraine genie popped up.
Massive thanks to Schmiken for driving me home - not having to ride there saved me from an absolute blinder - I'm not feeling great this morning at all, but I would have been in a much worse state if I'd got home any later.
I'm going to have a strong word with myself about this - migraines cannot impinge on biking!
I'm not around next week - but hope to see some of you the week after. And if anyone is up for the Peaks on Saturday 26th then you are more than welcome.
Great ride last night guys! Although the sprint in was a bit savage.
Everyone, next time work a little harder getting there. It'll give me more of a chance in keeping up 😀
Anyone out and about on bikes this afternoon (Mon)?
Danny, thanks for guiding me around today. Another great ride.
Here are the stats you asked for;
Distance 34.53km
Time 2hrs58mins (we'll say 3 hours)
Climb 346ft.
Have a good week away with the family and hopefully I'll see you Saturday.
I might be bumbling around cademan Rascal but that's about it.
I'm not entirely sure you have the correct climbing stats there asbrooks 😀
I hope those climbing stats are wrong!
Just doing my rule of thumb guesstimate (counting upward contour lines only) I've always made that route out to be somewhere between 450 and 600 metres of ascent, I was just a little surprised when scandal clocked it at 2100 ft which would be about 640m if my basic maths is up to it.
Anyway, sounds like this could become a talking point.
The basic plan for Saturday is to get pedals turning ASAP on arrival at Ladybower. I plan to do the climb from the Bridge End car park and do Lockerbrook as a descent before heading off northwards to do a Cut Gate out and back. On arrival back at the reservoirs we can then decide on whether to do a quick blast up to Whinstone Lee Tor as well, or just roll back to the cars.
I'll be without any form of communication until Friday pm, so I guess if any of you guys want to combine lifts etc, then it would probably be best if you did so and didn't worry about me.
If we do the same as last time (meet Trowell services northbound at 8-30am), then we can get there at a decent time, hopefully bag some free parking and then ride at a nice contained pace. My fitness is not optimal right now, so not putting ourselves under any pressure by getting up there late would be best(!)
If anyone is interested, stick a post on here. If not, I'll be going anyway.
Have a good un on Wednesday night and hopefully see some of you at Trowell on Saturday morning (although I won't be buying anything at that service station again, the prices last time made me feel a bit faint!)
Just got back from Swithland area Matt cheers - hope you have a good spin out your way - lovely and dusty apart from a bit small bits - a lots of yummy dogshit!
The amount of dog shit on the paths and trails round Swithy is, frankly, disgusting. In fact all the paths in Charnwood forest are covered in the stuff. Bloody infuriating.
You fellas riding on Wednesday? I still owe pints
I'm probably in, where and what time we meeting this week?
Actually Danny it was 593.78 m. I was looking in the wrong place.
593 is more like your estimate.
I'm not out this coming Wednesday, going to gig with the significant other. Have good ride though!
Cheers for the clarification on the stats, I was about to go into a massive depression!
600m over 21 miles is the sort of stats that you see for mbr recommended rides in the Chilterns or Surrey Hills, so it is not as crap round here as a lot of people make out!
Hope to be out Weds - first day back in work after 3 weeks off so have to see if they want their pound of flesh! Man Within Compass car park Weds 7pm?
Yep, Man Within Compass sounds good to me.
Hopefully last nights and todays rain dries out before hand as it was running nicely last Friday.
Forecast looks OK. I'll try and make it if all is well with the nippers
Hello folks...just wondering how many are likely to be out tomorrow.
Lights on charge and looking forward to it as not been for quite a while.
I know the NWLRC spiritual leader Danny won't be there - Scandal, the mantle passes onto you - you in? 😉
I'm planning on being there.
