Heading to Tissington over the Easter break. Looking for a ride for one big(gish) day out (for me) and one for the family (a bit of single track/views/small towns etc to try and appease both the kids and the missus)

Any advice as always much appreciated.

this is an absolute belter and is my favourite white peak ride. This one for you by yourself.

going down Coombs dale is a hoot!

For the wife and family, I'd suggest just going round Carsington Water. Easy carparking and a nice little loop that isn't as easy it would appear on a map. There are quite a few ups and downs which should challenge the little ones and bring a smile to their faces too.

Depends what a big(gish) day is, but this is definately on the big side: South Peak Loop

Thanks Graham - I think at 70M I'd still be cycling through the night was thinking more like 30M tops.

Jekkyl thanks Carsington Water looks like something the missus might enjoy.

You're welcome. I'd recommend going anti-clockwise (so you go across the dam first) from the visitors centre, to make the hills a bit easier. There's one in particular in the middle which if you go anti-clockwise you'll be going down it.

Another easy route for the family to consider is the high peak trail. Would be better views than round Carsington but not as bumpy. There's the tissington trail as well of course which runs to Carsington.

very well. There's patches of mud but mostly it's good. It's not the rock fest that you'll find in the dark peak but it should be fine. There's lot of slight variations to that route and every time I go I try out a different way back up to the quarry.

I've just relooked at the link I put up and I have some reservations about it. They chose to go up Coombs dale, which is a travesty! and they also miss out the graves descent at Eyam which is ace! Let me have a dig about on my strava and I'll send you an email later with the better route.

Edit: no need. I uploaded it a while back to justgoride.

you can dl the gpx there. Starts at bakewell carpark on the monsal trail, which if you get there early free parking on the road. Hope you've got climbing legs coz the climb back up to the quarry is a pig!

My fave White Peak ride starts from Calton Lees car park in Chats worth, goes up and over Calton pastures and drops down to Bakewell, then up Intake Lane to Haddon Fields and the switchbacks to the river Lathkill (best 30m in the White Peak IMO) then through Youlgreave across the field bridleways to Birchover, Clough Lane and over the A6 to the bridleways that traverse Fallinge Edge, up onto the moors above Chats worth and back down to Calton Lees. Dunno if it's in any route books, but it's about 35k and fairly easy to spot/navigate with an OS map

Fraid not chap, I'm still in the olden days here, only ever use OS maps and my memory to plan rides, and if I did I wouldn't know how to post it up! Happy to show you round if you like, or if you email me (in profile) I can give more detailed directions

Thanks Jekkyl, I'm not ending the ride with a climb am I?

Mildbore thanks, will pull an OS map of the area in any case and take a look at your suggestion just in case.

oh no. if you start at Bakewell you'll be ending across the golf course, a cracker of a descent.

I must bookmark this as I keep meaning to go riding in the Peaks and this will be a little closer than the north side! Is it easy enough to follow your link jekkyl without staring at the gps the whole time?

Depends what you mean by good! I always enjoy that route, usually when I've ridden other Dark Peak routes a bit too often. I always spice it up a bit with some cheeky stuff though. Basically it's all about the rocky switchback off Stanage Edge. Overall it has a fair bit of road in it, and Lady Cannings is closed at the moment. If you don't know the Dark Peak or don't often ride there, you get more bang for your bucks by riding some of the loops around Ladybower/Hope/Castleton IMO

For hrgb's link, the descent where the lead photograph is taken is bypassed by the mapped route... The photo is on the techie descent from Stanage Edge through the plantation. Not always easy to find from above unless someone shows you.

Mildbore - if I'm not mistaken you must be PS? You took me and my family on that route many years back - great ride especially the short section down into lathkill dale.

Living on the edge of the The Peak now, so finding some routes every weekend 🙂

Paul, good to catch up!

I'm off to Hamsterley with Alex and Tom this weekend but will be in touch - Easter holidays looming, so should be able to meet up then?

I'm enjoying the suggestions in this thread. Might I ask: How many people here have ridden the South Peak Loop, and how long did it take?

I'm wondering if it would be a useful training ride for my SDW in a day later in the year (I'd be looking to do the South Peak Loop in probably June).

Rob

If you do the Bakewell golf course decent just take care, the Mrs said there were trees down after the high winds a few weeks back. Don't know if it's been cleared yet as I've not been that way for a few months.

it's this one tuska: http://www.peakhorsepower.co.uk/south-peak-loop/4591186779

It's not really a mtb loop in the strictest sense, just bridleways and lanes. It's 70 miles long.

We are staying near Alton Towers next weekend - does anyone have any recommendations or routes not too far from there? Ta!

Thanks to Paul for showing me around albeit the ride was cut short due to a wish-we-had-camera-rolling crash which took out his entire rear wheel and a dented front wheel.

For a sexagenarian Paul sure can fly down the trails.

From Calton Lees car park, up through the woods at Calton Pastures, crashed on the descent, end of ride. Gonna do it again soon though, haven't ridden it for a few years. It's the route I mentioned earlier in the thread, if you fancy joining me sometime drop me an email
