Hi,
A few of us are riding the way of the roses next week but leaving the route at ripon and riding to Scarborough in a day.
I'm then riding to hawsker in Whitby along the cinder track to stay at a friend's caravan (it's going to be a long day)
The day after I'm riding back to Halifax in west Yorkshire. I know my route from pickering back but I'd like to avoid the main road and as many hills as possible as I think I'm going to need as much help as I can get.
Any suggestions? I'm heading towards Wetherby so happy to miss pickering if you can think of a better route.
Gpx files welcome.
Thanks
I've ridden the main road, it wasn't that bad even on a summer weekend.
Apart from you'll have to climb Blue Bank and Saltergate, but they're shorter and sharper than the other way arround.
I did Skelton -> Whitby -> Scarborough -> Pickering -> Thornton -> Whitby -> Guisbrough -> Saltburn which felt like the wrong way as it was all long drags uphill then losing it all the benefit on the steep downhills!
If you wanted to add some climbs and mileage you could go Grosmont, Egton Bridge, Rosedale Abbey,Rosedale Chimney, Hutton-le Hole, Cropton and then Pickering. Or you could miss out the Chimney and go straight down the valley from Rosedale Abbey to Cropton.
I want to avoid as many climbs as possible. I'm no as fit as I used to be. When I've stayed in Whitby before I've done that route. It was enough without having to ride a further 70 miles on top. 😂
