Hi, up in Whitby for a day or so. Can anyone recommend some nearby routes? Looking for one about 15-20k to do with family. Does not need to be too technical challenging. Then a route for me, more interesting bits would be good.
Any ideas would be useful. Cheers.
The cinder trail goes to Scarborough, but you just go as far as Robin hoods bay or Ravenscar stop for an ice cream the head back. Nice family ride that.
No idea about proper MTB routes though.
Yes the cinder track maybe as far as Ravenscar is great for a family run out.
My Mrs is from Grosmont originally so I know the area pretty well. MTB straight out of Whitby is a bit limited.
Your best option for close by proper MTB would be to head up onto the moors around Glaisdale area. There are some nice moorland tracks up there. Generally not that technical but there are some good hidden technical descents if you know where to look. Will be riding well with the dry weather.
Alternatively, going a bit further, I would head for the Dalby off-piste for enduro laps
Also: Guisborough woods not too far
I did the cinder trail with my kids last year in the sun. Was ace.
You can mix it up a little by dropping off and doing some of the bridleways too.
For example: off on the way back by browside farm hit the road towards Boggle hole then do the river crossing at mill beck farm for example.
Thanks. Will take a look at a map. How do you find the dalby off piste? Do you need to know or is it easy to spot on your first visit?
Along the cinder track then turn off to Boggle Hole. Do whatever beach thing is your thing, ice creams / coffee/ lunch at the YHA cafe bar at the edge of the beach (really this is a thing), push up the hill and back.
Robin Hood's Bay is nice but v. busy, beach is less good at that end and the push down and back up the hill would be horrendous (the pavement has steps in it so pushing down might be needed if not very confident).
For MTB head inland or look up the Moors 2 Sea routes. You can probably link together some good bridleways from Falling Foss (about 4 miles S of Whitby) whilst the family do the woods, waterfall and cafe there. Or loop round Hole of Horcum, top edge of Dalby and Fylingdales Moor.
This is my favourite route. It's not very extreme but the views are amazing. It's gravel bike friendly.
Start at beacon farm which has a great cafe.
May beck climb to the gravel roads behind the RAF base.
Drop down the 5 miles descent into Dalby forest. You come out by the coptic church with the statues.
Climb up broxa hill and go through broxa forest and Harewood Dale forest.
Cross over the main road by the falcon pub and head to ravenscar over the moors.
Drop down the cinder track and keep going, before you get to river esk bridge crossing, come off and drop down to sleights and back to beacon farm.
Its about 35 miles, 75% off road, 3500ft climbing. Takes me between 3 and 4 hours depending on headwinds.
Thanks all. A few things to take a look at. El_ may message you in a bit. Thanks
