I missed out on a trip to Whistler a couple of years ago and have regretted it daily since.
I now have 2 boys and want to take them and the boss for a break next year.
We are keen self caterers and prefer the freedom it gives us with.. Well, catering.
I would love to hear all (good and bad) stories.
Happy to go half board if it includes waffles with maple syrup for breakfast.
Whistler is awesome. I went back in 2006 after getting excited with my first paid job/credit card combo! Itching to get back now I've got a few more years experience under my belt to really make the most of it. A lot of the first couple of days were spent looking at the trails with 'we're not in Kansas anymore' looks on our faces! Especially when we headed up to Pemberton to try the local's trails!
It's pretty expensive but worth it, think it was about £1500 all in for flights, accommodation, car hire, lift pass and bike hire for a week. From what I remember though beer and grub was pretty cheap so spending money goes pretty far.
Enjoy!
Beer and food there isn't cheap any more! I stayed just outside in Creekside for just over 2 months last year and it was awesome but expensive. Weekly food shopping came to £60-100 just for me and I didn't even eat that much! Beer also expensive especially with tips on top. Great place though and definitely worth the money.
I stayed in one of the self catered condos at Southside Lodge, I'd recommend them. The owner is a really nice guy and they don't care about mud or tyre marks! Plus it was about a minutes walk away from Southside Diner who do good food and coffee. 2 minutes walk away from Samurai Sushi 🙂
My new wife and I loved it last year.
However, I would be tempted to split the holiday and spend a few days in Vancouver as its a great place. Enjoy the restaurants/touristy stuff (and the North Shore) and then up sticks and move up to Whistler. Its what we did and the only thing I would say is we should have gone for three weeks rather than two so we could have seen more of Vancouver 🙂
Stayed in a hotel and ate every meal out - wasn't too bad, but that was 2 of us not a whole family.
Strangely we couldn't find many places that did pancakes & maple syrup for breakfast. The one we did eventually find (which was close to the main square type thing where the main chairlift goes up from) we went to every day thereafter.
We went early July which was too early as the top half of Whistler wasn't yet open... however there was still plenty of runs there and with the lifts being open far longer than in the Alps (10am - 8pm) we were completely beat up after 4 days. Mind you, we only stopped for coffee & lunch and that was it - full on, all the time, first 1st chair, to very last.
Check out www.ticket2ridebc.com, has lots of info on the riding and also different accomodation packages that might suit you.
we always use this when we go away as using a condo is much better than a hotel due to you being able to socialise more

make sure you get parking for a vehicle if needed and somewhere secure for your bikes if needed....most people cater as they know their market
We stayed here once - not the cheapest but very comfortable, 10 min walk to Whistler Village. Owner is an mtb guide / instructor (and bob-sleigher!).

Look out for bears!!
Slight hijack (sorry) but: is whistler/bc really worth the extra hassle getting there rather than staying in Europe? I am considering taking my son next year but I can't help thinking it could be a long way to go to ride the same stuff you can find in the alps.
We stayed at Squamish on our last visit, great place and Whistler is only minutes up the road.
You may get better prices there.
Feel free to get in touch,
We've a plethora of self catered condo, townhome and hotel units available to us and can help find something to fit you budget and needs.
