Planning a whisky based cycle tour from Aberdeen to Inverness, taking about a week. We can either go in late March/early April or in July. What would be best time of year? Do we need to worry about midgies if we go in July? How inclement will it be in March/April?

All other advice gratefully received! 🙂

Assuming you want to visit lots of distilleries, check when their visitor centres open. Many will be closed in March. However the roads will be quieter.

Yes, there will likely be midges. However you can mostly ameliorate them by using Smidge and by not stopping in still, shady, damp places.

Your guess is as good as mine. We were still skiing in early May last year. It was also 20C in May.

Visit the Cooperage in Craigellachie and make sure you stay at Dufftown.

If you can, head in the other direction (e.g. start in Inverness) as that'll likely have the best wind direction.

If you're interested in beer too I might be able to arrange a brewery visit. My mate owns one and used to be a distiller so a good chap to chat to.

Oh my god that would be amazing!! We're still planning right now, but it'd be great to drop you a line about it when we know what we're doing..

Like shooting fish in a barrel, as well - stopping at even a percentage will take longer than a week 🙂

Do you have any particular distilleries in mind to visit - i.e. coastal or inland?
