A group of mates and I are heading up to Keswick this weekend. Plan was to ride Whilatter on Saturday and Bowwordale Bash on Sunday.

Does anyone know what condition they are in at the moment? Is there alot of snow/ice?

Also best pub for a good meal and a good pint on saturday evening?

Thanks

There is snow and ice in the southern lake district but if anything its made the trails easier filling in the holes and gaps between rocks into a smooth surface towpath. I can't see the borrowdale bash being too badly effected.

In terms of trail centres I'm not sure about Whinlatter but Grizedale is fine to ride at the moment.

Check the Cyclewise and Whinlatter web sites. There was some issue with ice early last week and obviously depends on weather during the rest of this week

Did the Bash yesterday, its fine no ice to cause any issues. Did whinlatter last week and that was iced up a bit at the top of the south but was all still rideable. The forecast is mild all this week so come the weekend it will be fine.... Well when i say fine i mean no ice but it'll be a sh*t fest once it thaws

Both ok.
rode Whinlatter South Red yesterday with two youngsters ( 8 and 13). just a bit of thawing ice near the top.
Spoke to a guy who'd done Borrowdale bash earlier this week, said it was ok. North Lakes thawing! have a good one.

Thanks for the info, ill check back later in the week as the forecast is for mild weather so hopefully what icey patches there are should be gone.

Good to know its not looking like the weekend will be a write off anyway!

Just thought I'd ressurect this thread as the weekend is nearly on us.

I'm assuming its all clear up there now, seen a few threads about Whinlatter this week and from what ive seen it seems like any snow or ice has cleared up. So now that just leaves the one remaining (very important) question.........which pub for food saturday night and which for a good Beer? Any pubs up there serve Hawkshead or Loweswater brewery beers?

For Food and Ale, head to the Goerge Hotel, they do a Steak Pie that is huge and very tastey. Good ale too, try Jennings "Sneck Lifter"

It get's busy so try to head up around 6/7 to eat in the bar or book a table in the restaurant, jeans and fleece/hoody will fit in no bother.

the Dog & Gun is also good for Ale

Both in town

The kirkstile inn. Not in keswick, but has food and the beer you seek.
Some decent riding nearby too.
The pheasant in keswick is pretty good. Just in towards town from the roundabout junction off A66.

Did the bash yesterday, conditions are perfect.
Enough drizzle to put off the ramblers, but we didn't really get wet....
Great Tea Shop in Grange near the end of the ride as well.

+1 for Dog and Gun.

your better off going to the Swinside Inn for a pint then the Tea shop in Grange as you have one more climb just after you have a tummy full of tea and cake!

as you come off Catbells, you'll bash down the road for a mile or so and its a few hundred meters down the first road on your left, marked Newlands Vally and Buttermere.
