Personally I think that Wiggins winning the tour would be by far the greater achievement, but the British public would make Murray winning Wimbledon a bigger 'event'.

We have had a British winner of Wimbledon before, but the Tour has nevere been won by a Brit.

Wiggins result over Murray for me
met Bradley in a hotel a few years ago. he was pissed up and his mate came over and apologized about him
and said watch out for him in a few years he will be a star .

Murray obnoxious Git IMO

Why does one have to be a "greater" achievement? They would both be huge achievements, and the pinnacle of their respective sports.

For Murray to compare he'd have to win a few of those grand slam things, not just Wimbledon. But yeah if he wins most the country will go crazy for a bit, if Wiggins wins most won't notice.

For me, just the physical difficulty of merely completing the tour means it is by far the biggest acheivement of the two.

Wiggins would be the greater achievement.

The UK does not have a great history of success in road cycling.

By comparison Lawn Tennis was invented in the UK.

Also, the TDF must be the physically hardest major sporting event in the World.

Apples and oranges....cant really compare, they are both top achievements but tennis is more mainstream so will get the media support....lets not forget that most of the recent mainstream press coverage of cycling concerns doping scandals.

Is it? I wouldn't be surprised if there's more competitive cyclists then tennis players in the UK.

Well for Murray to win wimbledon this year he's gonna have to beat the GOAT......

Shouldn't be compared IMO, both massive achiebvments.

Well, clearly both are extremely fit

But Murray also has to exercise close-tolerance control over a ball that moves at up to 130mph while wiggo has to sit & pedal

(/devil's advocate)

Would Murray's win not be a Scottish achievement though as opposed to a British?

No he's Scottish if he loses, British if he wins 🙂

Plus if he wins, every generation alive now will hear about it at every opportunity, until the next one is won.

RealMan....i hear what you're saying but numbers of participants means very little to TV coverage etc etc....i think i'm right in thinking Fishing has the most participants as a sport in the UK, many many more than Rugby for example....thankfully though its Rugby that gets the media coverage.

How many people get the impression that Cav winning stages in the tour may well have more recognition and understanding in the British psyche than if Wiggo won the overall?

Well there's more TV coverage of the tour then Wimbledon (I think), and apart from Wimbledon, tennis doesn't really get much of a look in.

Think about what the track cycling medals from China did for cycling in the UK. Now think what yellow in the TdF and gold in the Olympics could do. Think about Wiggins in yellow leading out Cavendish for the win in Paris (really should not have said that..). These things could happen.

Both would be fantastic achievements yet as Phil says they aren't really comparable directly. One thing not yet said about Murray is that he's competing against the greatest player ever. Lets not forget that neither has won anything yet 😉

The TV coverage for the TdF tends to be on satellite channels and ITV4...whereas the BBC goes bonkers for Wimbledon each year....you cant compare the hype surrounding the two....look at the back pages this past week, its been Murray - mania.

Regards Cav, Wiggins and the Olympics....something like that could be the tipping point however, that kind of scenario (which is a distinct possibility) would be hard for the mainstream to ignore....just like how everybody became a Ruby fan after England's 2003 World Cup win.

It sounds like there is some bitterness about the TDF not getting mainstream attention. Most people would rather watch paint dry than see a group of guys cycling through the French countryside. I would not like to spend my time watching a sport where you can't be sure that the winner hasn't been cheating. The downfall of road cyclings chequered past I suppose.

Pointless thread. They'd both be great achievements, but I couldn't care less who wins the TDF as I never watch it, have no interest in it and find it incredible dull. Quite like watching tennis and want Murray to win. Will be tough to do so though. But folk can find tennis dull.

I'm not allowed to have my say to a pointless thread?

Can't really compare but I'd say Murray.
He will win it by himself during an tournament and era which has the 3 arguably the best players of all time.
Wiggins has a whole team helping him, if he does win it who is to say Evans would not have if they had the same support.

Given the choice between only one achieving I'd want Wiggins though.
