I've just moved house and am going to have a daily commute of about a 25 mile round trip. Given the state of the weather at the moment I'm looking to get a decent waterproof jacket. I've got a small altura rain jacket for emergencies but am after something a little more substantial. Budget is £70 - £90.

Any recommendations would be appreciated?

Had a similar conundrum to you but didn't want a full on jacket as I get quite warm anyway. I opted for a Gore AS windstopper gilet and some Crud roadracer clip on mudguards.

Mudguards are off at the moment as the weather improved slightly, but it takes a few minutes to put them back on.

I also have some Gore waterproof shorts, those and the gilet are a pretty good combo for when the weather looks sketchy.

Mudguards will defintely help!

I have an Altura Nightvision Evo for when it is proper rainy and/or cold - went for the expensive Evo one as it came in red which stands out better than the grey or black in normal light, and I've had other cyclists and even drivers (!) compliment me on the reflective panels at night. All jackets are hot and sweaty, this one is livable with.

As a day to day emergency caught in the rain jacket, I use a horrible purple pertex thing that must be 20 years old, but it still does.

ive always used northface jackets. i like that you can unzip the fleece bit (can probs do with em all like) and thay really do last. not sure about 90 quid tho. i paid 160 for last one but thay do last a long long time. so if u do get one make sure it fits coz you will have no reason for a new one in the next 5+years

pertex for this time of the year, either with or without arms. pertex gilet and a pair of roubaix arm warmers are a very versatile combination. when it gets colder the arm warmers will go well under a proper waterproof.
proper waterproof will be boiling this time of year, and you're likely only going to be out for ~1/2 an hour at a time anyway.
checkout the montane stuff on merlin.

I've got one of these, only use it when really hammering down as it can get a bit warm after a while. Easily stowed in a jersey pocket though.

Hi guys. I was considering the Gore Countdown or Path gilet but don't have any experience of either and was not sure about the breathability and resistency to rocks and brambles of both. I was also considering the Endura Softshell or Helium jacket. Would anyone be able to give a little advice?

Something cheap and ultralight, one of those shell type things with no frills. It's going to spend its life screwed up in a bag being dragged out every once in a while - anything expensive is just going to get trashed; anything with pockets, fleecy bits etc is just going to add weight.

I've got an ancient Specilaized branded shell jacket which is a good emergency top, it just lives in my commuting rucksack so I'm never without it.

I got a Hagloff jacket 1/2 price from Cotswold. It is a climbers jacket with a big hood that fits over a helmet. Finding it really good in this weather 😆
I also find Montane stuff good and fits me better than some of the others
