26in wheels.
aggressive rider.
all year round use.
best possible combination of grip and rolling resistance.
1. minion dhr ii 2.4 dual compound
i run the 2.3 dual and find it awesome.
i want a bit more cushion than the 2.3.
has the 2.4 much more volume/cushion than the 2.3?
will the 2.4 add much more rolling resistance (i read that it has much bigger knobs than 2.3)?
2. maxxis aggressor 2.3
is it any good for light mud/slop?
from what i read, it's not a particularly good tyre for non dry conditions.
does it have lots of volume/cushion? i also read, that it is a bit skinny.
(unfortunately, i see that the 2.5 will not come for the 26 wheels)
3. nobby nic 2.35 speedgrip
is it any good for light mud/slop?
according to schwalbe, speedgrip is a huge upgrade compared to pacestar.
if it is true, this may be one of the best rear all year round tyres.
4. vittoria morsa
i read good reviews, i guess it is in the same category as the aggressor.
On my second bike with a DHR 2 on the rear, got mates who like the HR2
spesh purg
Supergravity magic Mary.
I have a minion DHF up front, and pretty much every time I ride, I remind myself that I need to get that new Mary on ASAP. Then I forget, of course.
Brilliant all round front tyre.
I can't see past the DHR2 2.3 Dual as a do-anything rear. It rolls so much faster than the 3C version and wears better, without the less tacky compound seeming a problem when it's wet.
The DHR2 2.4 is quite a lot more knobbly - I was checking that and the DHF 2.5 out a Banshee Darkside sharing the uplift at BMCC - my bike had the DHR 2.3 and Shorty 2.5 on at the time. I bought a DHF 2.5 for the front after that but don't think I need something that big and knobbly on the back.
Both the DHR2 2.3 and 2.4 are fantastic- the 2.4 is a little bit knobblier as well as wider, the whole thing's scaled up a bit, so it does drag more but the grip tradeoff makes it worth considering. They aren't quick, though- quick for the grip levels but still. Mine is hung on the wall and currently a SS fitted instead.
Nobby Nic is too delicate ime. I mean, the DHR2 isn't exactly tough but the Nic is an XC tyre with delusions of hardcoreness ime.
Don't know about the others.
All round, all conditions, all year?
Butcher front, Purgatory rear, both Grid casing.
Maybe not the absolute best in any condition, but amazingly versatile in everything but complete slop.
Always horses for courses...
But I have been won over by a 2.4 Ardent on the back. The only caveat is that it has to be paired with something more meaty on the front!
