For a new lightweight 29er rear wheel to take an 18t sprocket. Going to build with Crest, and probably DT rev spokes

Budget about £70 max for the hub, preferably around £50
Looking at
dmr with 18t freewheel
or superstar switch with single-speed conversion.

Any other recommendations?
Or do I just spend the extra and buy a hope hoop

Please note this is not a conversation about Octopi 🙂

Can't fault my DMR Revolver. Running a WI freewheel though which would blow your budget out the water but the hub itself is spot on.

Surly with a freewheel. When funds permit upgrade the freewheel to White Industries

Just bought a WTB Laserdisc single duty of CRC.. Slightly weird freehub design, and comes with a 16t not an 18t. Yet to get the rims to build it so I can't tell you what it's like.

For a new lightweight 29er

Hub + WI freewheel
can I get a family fortunes style nuh errr.
AFAIK freewheel and screw on hubs are not a lightweight option. Mine, whilst long lasting, weighs a tonne, not sure chi chi hubs shed much weight either. If you want light weight I think american classic and DT are more you're thing, but similarly out of your price range.

For the money probably a hope hoop make sure you get a wide base cog tho, on-one do one. Hope do a SS specific hub but they're even more portly than the standard hope hub.

I ran a surly for a while with a WI freewheel and it didn't weight a great deal more than the hope trials hub i have now.

Less than a hundred grams all in IIRC. I probably could have dropped that putting a lighter axle in.

At that price I'd sacrifice a little weight and get the more reliable option. Simple hub with freewheel like the DMR you suggested.

I currently have a bricklane bikes freewheel on one of my bikes and its an excellent budget option instead of WI.

If you want budget, just get an XT hub and a wide bodied sprocket and some spacers from On-One.

Or if you've not bought the spokes/rims yet, I've some Salsa wheels on rapide rims (crests with a pinned joint and eyeleted). Both are QR. Only negative is the rear freehub bearing is on its way out, cartridge though so shouldn't be a hard job (they're re-branded formula hubs). Not that old so I'd sell for the cost of the rims as I was planning on putting the rims on some other bolt through wheels but CBA now as I've 2 other similar sets.
