Due to reasons contained within this thread, I'm considering picking up some second hand forks if I can't sort the issue with my current 100mm Bombers.

I've just started riding again after a break of eight or nine years so don't want to go crazy; say around the £50 -£100 range if possible. I'm based in Southampton and don't envisage myself getting gnaar at any point soon. It'll mainly be local trails and the odd trip to somewhere further afield. So, two questions occur:

Having been away from mags and reviews, is there anything I should be looking out for that's a couple of years old that wil do an adequate job with fairly low maintenance? Conversely, is there anything I should seek to avoid?

In terms of measuring the steerer length that I need to be aware of, is it as simple as measuring from the top of the crown on my current forks to the top of my stem?

Thanks as always for any help.

with any secondhand fork i would be very aware of the hidden wear. Not uncommon for there to be stachion wear beneath the seals. best you can do is look very closely at the colour and particularly around the back of the fork just above the seals.

I would not bother with a specific model, or advice, apart from find the nicest set you can, that look as little ridden and cossetted as possible, from someone who clearly washes their bike and polishes it after every ride.
STW classifieds are that way ------------------->
(£50 Marzocchi X-Fly and £40 Manitou Mars rocking my kids bikes at the moment...)
