Hi. A friend is doing London to Brighton on the road on her HT soon. Her rims are 622-20, so 20mm internal. What size tyre should I buy for her for the road ? Presumably 700c is OK but what width ?

Would that be OK ?  http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/lifeline-essential-commuter-road-tyre/rp-prod155223

Also, can she use existing tubes that are fitted to a 2.20 MTB tyre or do we need smaller tubes ?

Many thanks

Nick

28c is the smallest on a 19mm, did get a 24c (Vittoria pave) on there but it was dodgy.

Oh and way smaller tubes too.

I'm running wtb i19 29er rims on my road bike (and hope five20 too), I like bombproof.

Jeez, this shit forum.

Can't edit.

Need smaller tubes too.

I'm running both wtb i19 and hope five20 on my road bike for the last 2-3 years.

Ffs edit shows up 5 mins later.

I have used 23c on a 21mm internal rim with no problems whatsoever but if you can fit 28c or bigger then that is going to better for comfort and rolling.

I've used my Grand Sport Race 28mm (that really measure ~31mm) on my FatNotFat 29er wheels of similar internal rim width, without any bother. I'm tempted to try my 25mm set, that will measure ~27mm.

Just watch out for tyre pressures being to high if using road tyres on MTB rims - 28mm and above would give a better ride anyway ☺️

Thanks guys. 28c sounds good.

Is this any good for the purpose ?  http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/continental-ultra-sport-ii-road-tyre/rp-prod123549

Or too sketchy in case it rains ?

There's no reason not to go wider. Comfort is increased (important if not used to longer distances) and all that nonsense about hugely increased rolling resistance of wider tyres has been disproved by actual science.

Should she keep her 2.20 MTB tyres ?

It would be easier on a more road type tree than a presumably knobbly MTB tyre.  They are also typically lighter as the knobs all add up to unnecessary weight for road use.  Something along the lines of a 35c Vittoria Voyager Hyper at under 400 grams and a good width would be my choice is using an MTB on the road.

No benefit of going ultra-skinny unless you like a harsher ride and probably more punctures - plus you get more progressive, predictable handling. Unless you're riding at average speeds in excess of 30kph, I find that 35mm is about the sweet spot between performance and comfort.

Went for this in the end : Bontrager AW1 700x32c hard case lite

£23 delivered for x2 including x2 tubes.

Do I need to use a stronger rim tape due to higher pressure as she probably only has a basic tape for low pressure mtb application. I have some 25mm TESA 4289 that might fit even is a little wide for the 20mm internal rims...

The time tape shpshobe fine. No need to go crazy on pressure anyway, 75kg here and running 70-80psi

Have a look at voyager hyper on Planet X 37mm.

Fast and Light (400g) for a big tyre, 40psi and 85kg here.

No pot hole worries.

edit- those Bontys look perfect, and very cheap.
