Im looking to get my partner some new forks due to hers being damaged by some scumbag. I've been looking at Rock Shox Recons but there is quite a range.

Coil or solo air? Silver or gold?

Or should I raise some more funds and treat her to Rebas?

She doesnt do anything hardcore but she is getting quite taken with mtbing and I've a feeling she's going to keep getting braver.

Would the Rebas be a fork she would ' grow into'?

rebas (and the longer revelations) are fantastic forks.

One advantage of getting an air fork for a female rider is they are normally lighter then us men so were a coil fork may need it changing (my other half has a stock medium spring in a Tora that barely moves for her) you can simply change the air pressure in the air fork. Then if you need to use it you can just up the pressure.

But on the flip side an air fork does have more initial stiction. The dual air models help overcome this with the negative chamber.

Weight is also a big factor.

I would rather spend the money now on a Reba then upgrade later on unless you get a second hand recon for now. Or just put a nice carbon rigid on for a bit until a deal comes along.

no worries. Now you have the choice of different rebas but in a way that's easier as price does dictate the decision a bit there. Worth checking out the classifieds for a used set.

Rebas will save a good chunk of weight and feel great when set up right.

I have a set of 08 (ish)coil Recons on my hardtail and they feel really nice, they can take some abuse as well, don't let price make you think they're inferior.

My mate has Air Recons on his (2010) Zesty and he hammers them on a regular basis, Warncliffe, Stainburn, Hamsterly DH and he's even done the Fort bill WC DH track on them and they're still running great.

I've never tried Reba's but i'd say that a set of air Recons would be plenty good enough! Then you could buy her a new riding top or shoes as well, she'd probably appreciate them more!!!

On One have Recon Silver TK for £110 new : http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/FORSRETK/rockshox_recon_silver_tk_coil_100mm_fork_with_lockout

Got 'em on mine and for the cash they're unbeatable. Done reds and blacks (and a few day-long XC rides too) and still running lovely.

Or Rebas for £250 : http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/FORSRERL/rockshox_reba_rl_dual_air_100mm_fork__26_inch

I got some 120mm air Recon Race's about a year ago from a German shop on eBay. Cost £180 brand new but were OEM and didn't come with a lockout remote (£20 extra). I'm very pleased with them, they have motion control damping the same as rebas and being single air, very simple to set up, and saved about 700g off the weight of my old coil Toras.
