I suffer from hot-foot, specifically Morton's neuroma.
Last year's Dirty Reiver in Specialized shoes and spuds was agony.
I have ordered wide Lake shoes, and I am wondering what 2-bolt clipless system might offer the best platform?
Any advice greatly appreciated!
there are some new insoles available that ease mortons and plantar facilitis.
and flat pedals work better than spds i found.
CB Candys offer a bit of sole support (especially if you have the little adjuster pads). I like them for touring when I'm likely to be wearing a relatively flexible sole.
Sorry, not answering the specific question, but I had a lot of issues with pain on the outside of my foot, and it turned out to be what one of the professional bike fit people (Friel maybe?) called 'waterfalling' i.e. I had the cleat too far inboard and this was creating extra pressure at the point where the shoe overhung the outside of the pedal.
Anyway, moving the cleats back to centre made a surprising difference. Might be worth trying if you can (although probably more specific to road cleats). I've since made a point of buying pedals with widest platform possible which I guess brings this wandering reply back to your original point!
Just to clarify, yes I moved to flat pedals for mtb a few years ago.
However I'll be doing DR 200km on a drop bar gravel bike so clipless is what I'm looking for.
Putting the cleats back as far as possible made a huge difference.

why should what bike/event you are riding dictate what clothing you wear for comfort when do said activity?
Another vote for flats + proper shoes (e.g. Five-Tens) OR getting some roadie pedals if it's not too technical as they're more suited to bigger distances and tend to have larger platforms to spread the load. I've got old school Look copies on my road bike and they're really good for the very rare occasions that I ride longer distances (but **** at junctions!).
Road SPD’s? Sorted my hot foot out.
i find that cheaper shoes make a hotspot more likely, i used to get it until i changed to a shoe with a stiffer sole.
The great thing about not using SPDs is you don't have to put on your dancing shoes when you want to go for a ride, so you can wear your most comfortable shoes.
I don't think a Morton's is going to be solved by pedal choice, at least not if it's like mine. What I need is metatarsal arch support and though there are lots of expensive options I find specialized's green insoles pretty good for 20 quid and really quite long-lasting
ALternatives: stiffer soles (but a bugger if you're doing much walking) or maybe moving the cleat around (most likely backwards)
Flats.
Feet are warm and none of this pain nonsense, Burgtec penthouse on my mtb and my cx bike, they're great.

I used to get numb feet which I mistook for cold feet, picked up a pair of blue insoles from Specialized and its gone away. I have a pair in each of my road or MTB shoes.
