looking for a new UST wheelset and thinking of either Deore xt or mavic crosstrail. Any owner reviews out there or opinions welcome.

I've got some 2010 crosstrails sat in the garage doing nothing if your interested. For sale or would consider swapping for something interesting (outdoor gear, biking gear, etc).

Hope Pro 2 hub, built into a Mavic xm819 rim, bomb proof and easy to get spares for if necessary. IMHO, of course

I've had a set of XT M775 wheels for the past 4 years and I really like them EXCEPT for the rear hub.

They are proper UST so no need for rimstrips or any of that malarkey. Not the lightest out there but the rims have never needed truing over thousands of miles and they are very easy to fit and inflate tyres on. Not sure how easy it would be to source replacement spokes, but they do seem very well built for a factory wheelset.

Rear hub, however, is a pain in the arse. I've found that it keeps loosening and needs constant attention. If you're happy with cup and cone maintenance and have the patience to fettle it continually then I'd definitely recommend them. After 4 years, the cups in mine are worn so there is constant play in them now. Front has been absolutely trouble-free. Still, 4 years isn't bad for a wheelset, in my view.

I just sold my mavic 819 on pro 2's to cover the cost of my new set of stan's flows on evos , the stan's aren't as pretty but they are better IMO ,

I found the 819's a bit dead and weighty , the ust system on the other hand was top notch , never had a burp a leak or anything ,

the stans are a really nice wide shape and spin lovely. I'm running tubes in them as I can't be arsed to go tubeless but I stuck on nobbys dd tubeless so I can whip them out if I fancy an evening of spraying latex sealant around the garden whilst swearing a lot.
😀

Not "proper" UST but tubeless the same way stans rims are, with a rimstrips... Specialized Roval Traverse EL or Control EL.

Just picked up a pair of the Traverse EL's myself and done about 5 rides on em, they're ace. DT Swiss 240 hub guts, 1550g weight (the Controls are 1450ish but with a lighter rim), tubeless ready, 26mm rim... But the killer deal is they've got 40% off from any Spesh dealer right now, so a £600 wheelset is now £360, or even less if you get discount from your local Spesh dealer like I do... 😀

Don't underestimate just how much difference light wheels make either, these are about 500g lighter than Pro2's on 819's which is massive!
