Having managed to do this to my Bontrager set-up..

[img] [/img]

it's time to go shopping - i'm thinking XT from Merlin seems the best offer / option out there but just checking for other ideas after the Square taper thread yesterday?
Middleburn etc are not in the 'affordable' bracket but I'm open to suggestions?

Off the shelf options appreciated as I want to order today...

Ta

Anything other than XT if it's about looks.

XT if you dont care what your bike looks like.

I hate bikes wit XT cranks, such a lazy choice.

Just a heads up whichever way you go but XT is cheaper at Parker International http://www.parker-international.co.uk/7354/Shimano-XT-M770-MTB-Chainset.html

Cheers

Have a word! Whats wrong with XT cranks? Would your prefer we all had XTR then would you? XT work fine for me. For price vs. reliability they cant be beat.

What's wrong with Deore?

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=40496

less than half the price of the XT chainset (175mm 4-Bolt 22.32.44 Black £49.99)

What about the new SLX they look nicer than the XT.

XT weights 853 g

Anyone know whatthe SLX or XTR weight as this may help marsdenman's decission.

KNowing marsdenman, saving a few grams on the crankset is the least of his worries 🙂

You may be able to justify the cost of the middleburn through superior longevity and cost of BB's

PMSL - Good job I know you!!! 😉

Sadly, I can report that the difference is 40 grams between XT and SLX..... and about £40.... (no need to remove my anorak - only know this as I saw it on a 'reviews' link when surfing for options.....)

- 😀 - had occurred to me as well but I cannot justify it.... even if I rode more than i currently do....

"XT is cheaper at Parker International "
But are they in stock?

"SLX or XTR weight"
SLX triple is 889g (so 36g difference for £40) which isn't terrible £ vs. g, but it may be you can ditch weight elsewhere for less. eg tyres, saddle .. )
(SLX double is about 1000g)
XTR is 770g

new XT cranks are very pretty in my opinon 🙂

ive got some superstar ones.
bottom bracket was gash, so replaced it with a nice hope one, but the cranks are light as hell, and nice and stiff. (also incredibly narrow Q factor)

when have shitmano ever been shit?

my LX cranks are absolutly faultless.

and a quid a gram is about right on weight vs price i think.

Truvativ Stylo? Again BB is crap but you can get a Hope one + converters when it dies

I've had no end of problems with my (Aerozine) Superstars one coming undone. I put this down to it being a one-bolt design.

It's a nice crankset and I want to like it but I can't. The weight savings are negated by having to carry a couple of proper allen keys around (ones that can take a bit more welly than the keys on my multitool).

I should just note that the weight is not really an issue - i'm over 15stone so a few grams won't be that much of an issue - i'll get getting the weight off my spare tyres before i consider the tyres on my bike.... 😀
Think XTR came in to the conversation as a typo - last years XT is the max level i'd be considering (though I do like the look of the new ones..) at the moment though i'm thinking SLX is best VFM....
