Looking for a recommendation for an all round mixed conditions tyre. But there's a twist, bear with me.
Yesterday I go all excited about a Nukeproof Digger. However I have a more road focused gravel bike already - a Bergamont Grandurance with a Tiagra double setup - with Gravel king SK's. I use it for winter road.
It struck me it'd be far cheaper to just get some decent off road tyres on the current bike for Spring / Summer gravel. It'll only take max 35mm on 700c so I looked at Centauro's or Schwalbe X One Superground this morning. This means I can swap the bike back to winter road for a 2-in-1 solution.
So, recommendations please and any comments to the fact my idea is bonkers are totally acceptable 😀
Most Cyclo Cross tyres are under 35mm, racing ones 30-32 ish
Vittoria used to make some crackers e.g. XN
Same recommendations as for a wider gravel tyre I guess, condition dependent.
My stock recommendation is a Terreno Mix if you want to play in the muddy bits occasionally (it's now my winter CX training/gravel tyre) but still cover ground, it's not too dis-spiriting on tarmac.
For pure gravel and tarmac I'd just say Terreno Dry. If I had to run one tyre for the whole year on a gravel bike then this is what I'd use, I would just rein it in a bit on e.g. steep muddy climbs or steep wet/muddy descents.
I like WTB Cross Boss (700x35) as a good allrounder - my reservation would be that the tread blocks are pretty close so they may not clear too well if your local mud is heavy clay. Local muds around here are more sand, grit and peat, so it's generally a non-issue for me.
I am using Schwalbe X One Allrounds and they are 33c and run at around 40PSI so enough grip and comfort for me on gravel and even worked okay on some muddy singletrack climbs.
The biggest surprise is how well they roll on the road as they don't feel any slower than the road tyres I had on before which Strava backs up.
They are also the easiest tubeless tyres I have ever installed. Went on by hand, pumped straight up with a track pump with not a single leak. Put in sealant and they have stayed up ever since.
Yeah , like kerley, but in 35mm. Pretty nice on tarmac, great on gravel, not so much on mud or anything slippery.Got them v.cheap from merlin. Easy tubeless too.
After a superb PSA on here a while back I purchased a pair of Kenda Small Block 8’s for the gravel bike. Great tyres for hard packed trails and although they clog up easily in mud do provide a decent amount of grip.
Apparently designed by a certain John Tomac so if good enough for him, will more than do for me!
Another vote for terrenos, great tyres. Indeed all the vittoria cx tyres we’ve had have been good - tough, roll well and easy to set up tubeless.
Have you checked to see what size tyre will go in the forks? all our cx bikes which say 35mm at the rear easily take a 40c front tyre and, imho, that makes a really noticeable difference.
Schwalbe CX pro.The best mud tyre ever and dirt cheap.

Vittoria Terreno Mix TNT will solve all your problems.
Schwalbe CX pro.The best mud tyre ever and dirt cheap.
Well they're not when compared to proper CX mud tyres
My worry with the Terreno mix is the wide gap between the centre and outer edge. I'm not a leaner so prefer a rounder tyre - although what's the real world experience?
Mrs Kilo and I’ve used terrenos Mixte, wet and dry, all around Surrey hills, swinley etc. They’re a really good tyre.
