My soon to be 11yr old is almost 5ft now, I have all the parts around the shed to build up a nice mtb for him, I'm hoping a 14" frame will fit him.

Not Tall People - 14" frames generally OK or does it depend?

I'd like to get him a Scandal but they dont have XS in stock. In-Bred an option but thinking alu rather than steel for weight.

Any other suggestions?

Same situation with my 10 year old. Looking for 14" Inbred frame or similar on eBay atm.

Kona and Trek seem to do small frames, CRC may have some Konas in stock?

Get him a dirt jump frame, the do them in 12" and it will still be fun when he gets bigger.

Yeh, alloy dirt jump frame, or santa cruz chamelon, think they come up pretty short.

I imagine a Scandal would be too big for him, think they're pretty long, with a long wheelbase.

Or a 4x frame/bike so he can have gears:

Dirt jump => thats like BMX type things you see kids (and men who should no better) riding around on with their knees bent?

I have this:

for sale at the moment.

It might be perfect as it has sliding dropouts so can take either 24 or 26" wheels and either gears or as a single speed. sorry if this comes across like i'm trying to flog you a frame but I thought it an ideal opportunity!!

Just bought Specialized Hotrock (womens, don't tell him) off here for not a lot. He is 4'10":

It is a smidge bigger allround than his Islabike - this is him last year on it, must have been 4'4" then.

Brother, who is .1" or thereabouts shorter, despite 14months in age, is on a Trek 13" - which is a nice 'shape' than the Specialized - less steep head angle / lower front it seems

Mrs_OAB is also 5', and has a longer Cannondale 12.5"/XS F900SL

Hi
I bought a 14" scandal off here for a build for my son 9yrs 135cm. But sadly got stolen. But was a nice frame.
What I have found is that weight is a big issue at this age.
It also depends on budget. You always transfer parts.
My son bear in mind does race, now has a giant xtc carbon extra small with very nice components weighing in at 19lbs.
Extra small frames are rare.

Yep, worked for mine - started with 24" and now on 26".

Alloy Dr Jekyel frame - here with a tall post in as my eldest was using it; whereas the youngest is barely 5'.

He must have looked like a midget on a 29er 🙂

I got my 11 yr old a new orange crush frame last year in an end of season sale, £195 for a 15 inch frame. The nice thing about the crush is it's very short in the top tube so works fine for a small lad. I put RS Sektor on it and it and he loves it.
