I have built up a bike for my 10 year old, mainly from old parts that I had from a bike of mine. The tyres are rather heavy and I wondered what people recommended in the way of light weight tyres. By reducing the tyre weight to 500g I can knock 750g off the wheel weight, which should make a difference for a 10 year old. So all you weight weenies out there, can you point me in the right direction.....
Kenda klimax 335 grams for a 26 inch and stil grippy.
Bontrager xr1 440 grams
Furious Fred 350 gams
Onza has the canis which is 470
What size and what to you want it to do?
Very happy with my Maxxis Ikons: 540g and low profile, fast rolling tread. Can't comment on their wet / mud abilities though. The fancy EXC casing is weak though, the side walls may be reinforced but the tread isn't and I ripped across the thread, on an easy trail. Replaced it with the standard compound and it's been fine, saves some money too. They weigh the same and are the same width, (dispite what the Maxxis site says).
They are for general XC riding with the old trail centre thrown in. Size 26 x 2.0 or there abouts. At 350g are the Kenda tyres very fragile? I had been thinking of Rocket Rons - any thoughts?
Are those weights actually real ?
I put some 2.1 Smallblock8's on the wifes bike. They were just under 500g each. I thought they were thin. How the heck they have lost a third of their weight is amazing. Wouldnt recomend them for anything other than dry summer use. When they let go its sudden & pretty unpredictable.
All the weights are real , I have pairs of each in the shed.
The lends are actually pretty damn good. I ran them tubeless and they weren't any more fragile than the rocket rons.
The only light weight tyres which is pants are the Maxxis 330 flyweight .
If you are local to fleet Hampshire you can take your pic if you want to try anything.
Sub 400g tyres are pretty useless on anything rocky.
2.1 or 2.25" Racing Ralphs are around 450-500g actually have some tread, are more durable but still lightweight.
Working on those weights I could take over a kilo off the wheel just by changing the tyres, which should make a considerable difference. We're in Ringwood, about 60 miles from you, but thanks for the offer.
On and on, are you looking to part with any of your light weight tyre collection? (If that's not a rude question)
To be honest I'm not really bothered. They sit in the shed and get used on various builds.
I've some which can go if you fancy a chat offline.
