I find the standard stuff does the trick, don't really need anything fancy.

Anything stainless, personally. I think I have clark in mine atm, in Shimano outers, they work grand and are cheap.

+1 any old stainless steel inner. Maybe of the right thickness but I think it doesn't really matter with sp41 outers. And yeah, bulk buying a reel of sp41 is good call. Much better value and just cut off what you need at the time.

Yeah any really, replace as and when needed, I don't think more expensive ones give enough extra longevity to justify much thought.

I had a smooth and maintenance-free experience with a premium teflon setup. Would buy again for the right bike.

Ribble have shimano and SRAM for 1.49 each. I stock up on that en masse

What ever my lbs sells me, usually around £2. I changed them fairly often.

I found when I bought expensive ones I'd run them too long to try and justify the cost.

Mostly I use sram pit stop stainless rrp £3 each and seem to last ages. Coated ones always seem to fail far to soon for the price.

Old gore ones did last 10 years on the summer road bike but fiddly to fit right and not sure they make them any more

Any branded stainless probably good, Jagwire Slick Stainless are excellent, works well with SP41. Some coated cables tend to loose their coating creating more problems in my experience.

All stainless are NOT the same!

Got 2 cables infront of me, one is very "rough" as the individual strands have not been burnished flat. The other one has and is noticeably smoother when you pull it through your fingers...

Clarks PTFE coated are £1.89 on CRC just now. I bought a bunch for stock as they have worked fine for me to date.

Over the years I've tried a number of innner and outer combos, really cant beat SP41 outers, sealed ferrules and / or rubber noodles with a Shimano teflon coated inner cable.
