Afternoon all
Had a mate get in touch who's after a new bike. He started riding last year with a cheapo Boardman hybrid and ended up really enjoying it and actually putting quite a lot of mileage in
So he's looking to upgrade at the moment. Budget is 700-800
His riding is still fairly leisurely, all on road, but he doesn't want to go full road bike. He still wants flat bars.
I've no idea about hybrids. I have already told him that he's picked about the worst time imaginable to buy a bike. Normally I'd recomend going second hand, but with what they're going for at the moment that's sort of negating that. I've had a quick mosey around and nothings leaping out at me
So I'll defer to the superior knowledge of the forum on the subject.
Any advice gratefully received
Thanks all
In that price range, the Boardman HYB 8.8 is good value. But that might basically be what he's already riding...
Alternatively, maybe a Pinnacle Neon 4 or 5 but I'd prefer that boardman.
Happy with my Whyte Shoreditch but the 1x gearing may be a bit limiting for road work. It’s fine for my short commute. Pinnacle Neon??
Cube SL Road - couple of models in that price range
For that budget he might be able to get last year's model with a higher spec
Hello again all.
Well after looking at your recommendations he opted to go for the Cube SL Road, which looked like a lovely bit of kit (cheers @ElShalimo).
Unfortunately, it seems that there are none to be had anywhere. Same with the Whyte
I have a 2017 Neon 4. Has done everything from the daily commute to 100 mile road rides & currently in "gravel" mode (only a change of tyres, right). Tiagra gears 1:1 ratio for the hills & basic Shimano hydraulics cover most things. Would recommend it. Appreciate there are many similar bikes and it doesn't look flash but then... it is a hybrid.
Just been looking at exactly that @flatpat. It's exactly what he's after but they won't have any stock in until August either.
I bet ebay will be full of them in 6 months 😀
Was just about to day, whichever you can find that's in stock, just the way it is at the moment.
My daughter would sell her Cube Hooper with an Alfine 8.
Wants £750.
It's done about 250 miles all up.
I bought it for her for uni, but it just sat for 2 years in her room with the tyres going gradually flatter and flatter. She couldn't be arsed carrying up and down the stairs.
I've replaced the tyres and added decent mudguards. I think it looks almost brand new.
It's a really nice bike to ride, handles securely, triple butted alloy and with the Alfine 8, about as trouble free as you can get short of going singlespeed. Size medium.
It'll probably end up on eBay when she gets round to it. I've told her it's in danger of me cannibalising it for its parts if she leaves it in my shed for too long, so that might motivate her. 🙂
The Leisure option looks like a good rigid MTB for gravel/easy single track but not available until August 25. If for purely road use I would go for a more road biased bike like the Cube SL Road (if you can get one anywhere)

Sorry, got the wrong end of the stick, @binners!
Must be fustrating at the mo if you can't get hold of a bike.
