To fit 1 1/8" forks, is this the correct item?

From the pics it looks like the bottom cup is for a tapered head tube but is reduced drastically internally

Definite no on that one. That is a standard 1 1/8th headset for old style head tubes - ie the most common type until taper steerers took off.

you need the on-one smoothie mixer but not sure if it comes with a crown race for straight steerers. If not you can either buy the crown race or buy the hope crown race adapter.

Personally i would go with a hope pick and mix headset and the hope crown race adapter. Or the superstar taper headset I have in mine came with both crown races and has been fine. Would have preferred the Hope but wasnt out when I needed it.

This is the on one headset you need: http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/HSOOSMTAPER/on-one-smoothie-mixer-tapered-headset

looks like it comes with the crown race for the 1 1/8th steerer so you would need to buy a new crown race in future if you switch to tapered. Problem with that being is it has to be available. For that reason I would go with Hope or Superstar.

Another option on a regular C456 is a Works components angleset type headset to give you the 'Evo' geometry.

Thanks for the in depth response there andyl! The bike is coming with a hope headset, I was under the impression a different bottom cup was needed to fit standard steerers. £8 adapter it is then, happy days!

yep, stick with the Hope headset if you can, the On One Smoothie Mixer HS aren't that great.

IIRC Hope did an early lower cup that looked horrible and was external type but step down to 1 1/8th so it actually went narrower than the C456 headtube. They then switched to the external 1.5" type and a step down adapter instead of opting for a large oversize crown race like some do - I prefer the Hope approach.

So you may not need anything if it is the early type and the previous owner had a straight 1 1/8th steerer or you may need the cheap adapter (should be around £8 from memory). It's a HS136: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/hope-tapered-1-5-reducer-crown/rp-prod71609?utm_source=Google&utm_medium=Shopping&utm_name=UnitedKingdom&gs=1&gclid=Cj0KEQiA7tCjBRDulMny5rfM0dkBEiQA7fcshV47iIaMzoCI5W7HwrMvbQoRhDEJqJEe6qrnEQpYmTkaAmGN8P8HAQ&gclsrc=aw.ds
