I've got a set of Hunt gravel wheels. They've been excellent overall in the nearly 5 years I've had them, still original bearings. But the rims have taken a battering with a few dents front & rear (still work tubeless), and a spoke went recently (just from braking) so wonder whether they're starting to fatigue.
So, options are either to rebuild with new spokes and rims (hubs & bearings are fine). Would like something a bit more robust than the Hunt rims. Any light but strong DT swiss rims to consider?
Or, new / good-used condition wheels?
Is Carbon worth bothering about for a bike that batters around the local trails and will get used for occasional bike-packing trips?
Budget is around £400/500 max for new wheels, ideally less. Would consider spending that on really good used wheels. Weight? No more than my current Hunts (approx 1600g). And old-fashioned QR hubs/axles.
Cheers
Rebuilds get expensive fast. I think you’d want better hubs to justify the cost.
St John street cycles is a good place to browse rebuild costs and see DT Swiss rim options
I got a set of DT GR531 on Pro 5 hubs for my gravel build.
Cost a bit more as I went with CX-ray spokes for strength and tbh because I had the funds but, the wheels have so far held up very well to a mix of riding with 120KG on top + bike.
Got mine from Moonglu, as I do all my built wheels.
I'm very happy with my Hope 20Fives , nothing has ever gone wrong or worn out, they're still perfectly true.
Aren't gravel moving to 750d size?
