I have been riding the 143mm saddle that came with my Specialized Tarmac for about five years. I ride about 15 miles around a lake twice a week, and usually have moderate discomfort (not numbness or out-and-out agony) in the general scrotum peritoneum area for about two hours after each ride. I'm kinda thinking of late that I don't mind having sore legs after a ride, but I'm getting too old to tolerate pain in the all-important family jewels.
So today, as goofy as it looked, I put my wife's huge/padded 176mm saddle on my Tarmac to see how things "down there" felt afterwards. Honestly, it was as if I hadn't even gone riding. Mind you, I'm not a big guy: 6'0", 151 pounds soaking wet. I wouldn't have suspected myself of having wide sit bones. But the results are hard to argue with.
So to get something a bit more appropriate for a road bike, I've looked around and the Selle SMP Plus looks like it's the most groin-oriented saddle out there. I have very little "padding" of my own, so a Brooks B17 just won't do, based on the purported break-in period (life is too short).
Any thoughts on the SMP Plus for a skinny guy like me? The biggest bike shop in Dallas doesn't even acknowledge the existence of the SMP Plus, so I can't try before I buy.
All depends on the width of your sit bones. Put some aloominum foil on a something like s carpeted stairs.. Sit on it.. Measure the distance between the indentations in the foil. Will give you better idea on what width saddles to look at..
