my 800 has finally given up the ghost. Tried to get them to recondition it (as folk suggested on here) but got a no...

so, looks like I’ll have to shell out. I want something with decent nav and that takes an SD card so I can use my old OS maps from the 800. But would also like to use HR and like the ability to get notifications from my phone.

anyone got the 1030 and think it has any significant extra value? None of them seem to get Stella reviews...

The 1030 is far better than the 820 in every conceivable way. Except for off-road, where the size of it is an issue. For road though, 1030 every time.

Don’t get an 820, imo. I have one!

also, no card slot on the 820 as far as I know, just onboard storage.

DCRainmaker likes the 1030, if you have the budget!

What about the Edge Explore? Seems too have a lot of the nav and connectivity features of the 1030 but a much more paletable price. I can't tell from the Garmin site if it has an SD slot but HR chest belts are listed in the accessories. I don't think its compatible with power meters if that is important to you.

( been looking as Ive also got an 800 & 1:50,000 OS on SD card but use it less and less with the availability of OSM maps. )

I went through the satnav debate around Garmin models and ended up with  Wahoo elemnt bundle :/ no regrets from me with that choice but have seen many say good things about 1030 but it is very £££

How do you find the wahoo for off road? Does it do OS?

Yes. I ditched the garmin for a wahoo.

Was quite happy with my 820 till the latest software update, now it’s just unusable when following routes and crashes constantly. Been back and forth on email for weeks with Garmin for a solution.

I moved from Garmin to Wahoo. Honestly whilst not as flash the Wahoo does a far better job of just being a bike computer.

Mapping is good - particularly if you have a phone with you - but Garmin is better for on the fly routing.

Other than that - battery life, screen clarity and usability the Wahoo wins hands down.

Garmin just seem to want to cram as many things in at the expense of the basics working. I love their watches still - the Fenix 5 is a thing of genius but I’ve had it with their bike computers after my 800 was just crap at the simple things.

and a Fenix 5x for the maps...

I’ve only got the 5 and I love it. Easily the best watch I’ve owned - certainly way more useful than my Galaxy Gear S3 was.

Wouldn’t be without it...
