Looking at a front tyre for mixed conditions. Natural rides, trail centres and uplift (BPW) options I'm looking at Maxxis Shorty 2.5, Maxxis Minion Dhr 2 2.4 and Michelin Wild Enduro 2.4 all in 29er. Just wanting some real life opinions. Thanks

The shorty 2.5 29er is a beast but tbh it only really comes into its own for horrible stuff- your classic tweed valley winter enduro sort of thing, where the mud is vertical. For anything else it'll work but drag unneccesarily and it doesn't come close to a Minion on harder stuff.

I've swithered on minions but finally settled on the 2.5 DHF over the DHR2 2.4, the dhr seems better braking and I reckon it's faster but the dhf just seems a bit more composed and allround capable to me. Both are excellent, and I'm happy using either for most stuff- great for bpw, pedallable enough for longer days, and offpiste they only really run out when things are really slippy. Good stuff.

Can't speak for the wild enduro.

Mostly agree with Northwind but my preference comes out for the DHR 2. DHF is great in dry and rocky stuff, but for natural trails especially wetter UK conditions I think the DHR 2 is better.

Magic Mary. Bit more of an all round tyre than the Shorty,  more of a mud tyre than the DHF. Available in multiple compounds and wall thicknesses.

Don't rule out the new Specialized Butcher Blck Dmnd. Come in 2.6 and 2.3 x 29. Just starting to get in the shops. Our daughter has been running them for the last couple of months on a daily basis in a mixture of conditions. It's like the grid version on steroids.

Wild Enduro is the best front tyre I've ever used (not been in proper sloppy stuff yet though).

Rolls well and just keeps gripping.

I really think Michelin have got things right with their current crop of tyres as the Force AM I have on the back is very good too.

I’ve been very impressed by the Wild enduro’s I’m running on my rocket front and rear, loads of grip and rolls really well. Will be interesting to see how they handle the slop in the next few weeks, but reckon they will be fine.

Magic Mary has unbelievable levels of grip in one of the softer compounds.

Tracey - I got on with Butchers in 26" flavour, but 27.5 and 27.5+ they have done nothing but try and kill me. I'm far from being on my own with this opinion. Not tried the Blck Dmnd though. I'm not sure I will either, as it's lack of vwls disturbs me

I'd be all over the 2.6 butcher if it were a 2.6 butcher. Instead it's like a 2.4 or something and I'm just kind of done with being treated like idiots by shitehawks

The 2.8 Butchers I've just ridded from my Kenevo were huge - way bigger than the 2.6 MM's I've replaced them with. Do you want them NW?

Ironically that's probably too big! All I wants, is a 2.6 that's a bastard 2.6. Soft rubber's an awesome material for tyres but a shite one for a ruler.

Just pressed the button on a 2.6 MM, hopefully this won't mean I can't have the mudhugger fitted too....

Aye, I'm with ya Northy, it's bloody annoying, I'd really like to try a 2.6 Hillbilly, and tbh at 2.4 it'd probably still be good, but it's advertised as a bloody 2.6.

Get it sorted ya muppets.

Any ideas on weight and are they actually a softer compound this time around.?Found the gripton grids to be lacking it grip compared to the maxxis shorty/minion, they barely showed any signs of wear!

I agree that its annoying that the Specialized 2.6 tyres aren't true to size, however I have been running a 29 x 2.6 Butcher Grid up front for a while and have been very impressed, it might not be a true 2.6 but it is still a meaty tyre.

I have just fitted a Hillbilly 2.6 and that really looks like it means buisness! I have moved the 2.6 Butcher to the back, its deffinitely snug in my 2018 Smuggler but hoping it will run ok.

I have always been a fan of specialized tyres regardless of the fact they are a little undersized, if the 2.6 Butcher rubs in the rear I will probably change it out for a BLCK DMND Butcher in 2.3.

Northwind and anyone else.

Measured the 2.6 and the 2.3 BLCK DMND this morning.

2.6

2.3

I have also measured the 2.5 WT and 2.4 WT Minions on identical rims with the same pressures, 22 front and 24 rear, the 2.6 Butcher is 2mm wider than the 2.5WT and the 2.3 measures the same as the 2.4WT.

The Slaughter 2.3 Grid measures 2.3

Will measure a normal Butcher 2.3 later once I have it fitted and inflated

Hope it helps

Need to measure it straight across Tracey, that's like a radial measurement.

Yep i know that. But its like for like real measurement comparing five of the six tyres on the bikes in the van. Its too hot and sunny to get the inflated ones out of the van and measure them. May have time when we get to Ainsa to do a new tyre measure as we have a selection of Minions, Butchers, Hillbillys and the new Eliminators in the van
