After years of riding bikes with built-in chain protectors, it seems odd to have one that doesn't:
I can't help thinking that with a bit of rough terrain, the chain will move around enough to mark the paintwork so I should probably stick some sort of protector on there.
Two choices I can see:
1. One of those ugly neoprene things
2. Some sort of heli-tape solution
What do people think? Any opinion or recommendations?
Return the bike and wait for the new Ultegra clutch mech - no protector required! Or, more usefully, self-amalgamating tape seems to be the material of choice these days
Mastic tape for me- it's thick and tough, and you can just put it where you want it. Which with clutch mechs, usually doesn't need that much these days

Heh, maybe not, but might be worth investing in when it's finally released. From my own experience with MTB stuff though, I would say that the clutch will help reduce, but certainly not eradicate chainslap. It's £90 that will probably end up getting spent later in the year though :-/

These are probably the best, technical solution, but I just can't bring myself to wrap a load of electrical tape around the chainstay of such a lovely looking bike without at least some effort to make it look less like a plumber's workhorse! I know it's all vanity, but....
You don't need to wrap it round, you can just lay it on the top or bottom, and cut it to shape if you're really picky. But wrapped tight, it looks nice too
Or, you can just slap 20cm of it along the top and have it look like crap, like I did
Use an old inner tube - wrapped like bar tape. Start at the drop-out and work your way towards the BB. Finish off with a couple if zip-ties.
Make it nice and tight so no moisture gets underneath.
